I seem to remember when I was young (not long after M-ways started to spring up) that they were referred to as 'slow', 'fast' and 'overtaking'.

Now I refer to them as inside, middle and outside.

Because of lorries probably....Does it not annoy you when a lorry is overtaking another lorry that is travelling at 2mph slower than him due to his speed limiter? Also, it serves to reduce congestion if you have more lanes....Was there any intended sarcasm in your post? :D

Should be called over over taking... ;)

I'm hardly ever on motorways. But it does annoy me on duel carriageways. More so when the lorry pulls out in front of me just before I'm about to over take them.

I thought they were the "Lorry lane," the "cars that dont want to overtake can go at any speed they want lane" and the "audi/bmw/mercedes and fiat panda fully loaded only lane?" ;)

  • Pet hate of mine. If we called lanes 2+ 'over taking lanes' perhaps the middle-lane hogs would know what they are for.
    Thinking critically since 1996....
