There is no law against changing lanes as many times as you want providing you do so safely and with all "due care and attention".

I sometimes do laps round middle lane hoggers, and see how many I can do before they cotton on and pull back in. Pull out, overtake, drop back to inside, slow down, repeat. Record is 7.

That's what I do. Unfortunately most middle lane hogs will decide that they're hogging the centre lane and decide to pull back in when you're going round them on the inside lane, without checking their blind spot and when you are in their blind spot!

If the road is in the slightest bit congested, I'll perform the move in two hits as opposed to one single one.
Oh I meant after overtaking them in lane 3, crossing back to lane 1.
  • I find it completely disgusting at the lack of lane discipline on our motorways so now I'll drive at my speed in which ever lane to get to my destination which means i'll undertake if necessary (although I'm not too keen on doing it).

Lane hogging should be punishable as driving without due care and attention as it's obvious their minds are on something else.

There is NO EXCUSE for lane hogging.

This reminds me of something my mum's bf said the other day. All 3 of us were in my car driving up the motorway having stayed at my grandmothers for Christmas. I was driving, and was of course flashing at and obviously getting annoyed with middle lane hogs every so often, which caused us to get talking about it, to which he said 'I always think if I'm doing about 70 then no one should be overtaking me so I stay in the middle lane. If anyone has the temerity to flash me I firmly stay put', which made my blood boil...

As did I, I was stating why I chose not to undertake....Or am I just confusing matters now? ;)

    1 - truck lane
    2 - car lane
    3 - motorcycle lane

Then again, as a biker I so rarely use motorways, because riding is such a pleasure and I'd rather take A and B roads to get to where I want to go - the twistier the better.

'Twas a late night last year, and i was returning from Manchester late one Sunday evening, sat at 70mph with cruise control on, in the inside lane. It was strangely quiet for the M6, there was a car sat at the same speed as me a small distance behind. As we were coming by Stoke, the motorway turns to the right, it sticks in my mind as A) I drive the M6 a lot and B) it is quite severe a turn for a motorway. There was a, I shall call them a "noob", noob sat in the middle lane doing 60-65mph, no-one on the inside lane as far as I could see. I stuck in my lane and went through on the inside, as throwing myself across all 3 lanes could have been lethal with that bend. The car behind followed me through, then lit himself up as an unmarked police officer, who pulled me for undertaking. I argued the toss about how the other driver should have been in my lane, and it would have been dangerous to go across 3 lanes on that bend, and that i was driving on cruise control so hitting the brakes to slow down could have caused a hazard to the car behind ie. him, and they eventually decided to let me off, but told me not to do it again.

Nowadays, i throw myself across the 3 lanes, and all the way back. That is apparently a safer way of driving when someone else is too stupid to read the highway code on lane management on a motorway.

Seems this debate is similar to the 'run over a cyclist and it's always your fault' argument - the other party can do what the hell they like, endangering themselves and others around them, but at the end of the day it's the people around them that get the rap.

A long time ago now, was travelling down M4, inside lane. It was a friday afternoon so pretty busy (I would call it congested ; ). It was fab, I was doing 65ish while lanes 2&3 were doing 55, just had to overtake the occasional lorry, apart from them the lane was clear for 40 miles!

As for undertaking/overtaking, I will move from lane 1 to 3 if the road is clear. If there are fast cars in lane 3 then I will pass (not undertake) on the inside. Why should I slow down/speed up just to satisfy the plonker in the middle lane? In my opinion, any car doing less than 70 (which includes myself most of the time now) is a car in a congested queue of 1, and therefore if other lanes (even on the inside) are moving faster then they should be allowed to pass.

Oh, and don't get me started about people who change from lane 1 to 2 2+ miles before a filtered exit lane on a mway...

where i live in north Birmingham there is a road (A4041) which is a dual carriageway beset with roundabouts and traffic lights. People will sit in the outside lane of this road for 2 miles, often doing 30mph(it's a 40mph road) because they are turning right at the roundabout/traffic lights at the end of the 2 mile stretch... infuriates me...
