If you're going clockwise on the M25 (at a section where there are 3 lanes) and you're in lane 3 then you are inside lane 1 (and 2)......0

on the subject of middle lane drivers
if im in lane 1 (slow lane, truck lane inside lane etcetc!) doing 70mph and i come across a middle laner doing 60mph does this mean i have to cross all the lanes to go round them or is it legal to pass them by staying in my lane. im basing this question on a empty motor way situation0 -
I thought they were called "eeny", "meeny", "miny" and if there are 4 lanes, "moe".
The more lanes, the bigger the probability of being in the wrong one.

Legally you have to overtake on the right, however crossing from Lane 1 to lane 3 in 1 maneuver can be classed as driving with undue care and attention as well so beware of that.Near a tree by a river, there's a hole in the ground.

I believe it is legal for you to stay in lane 1 if you are keeping up with the flow of the traffic and just happen to pass a car in lane 2. On the other hand it would be illegal to move from lane 2 to lane 1 to complete the overtaking manoeuvre.
I could be wrong though.0 -

I am sure there was a massive thread about this not so long back. I think the consensus (if you can call that on an internet forum) was you can pass them in the inside lane.
Edit: Exactly as per thescouselander's decription.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -

No your correct. passing on the left is fine, undertaking isn't. It becomes undertaking when changing of lanes is involved for whoever is over/undertaking.0 -
the other morning at 3am while travelling down the m25 on the 4 lane bit i was in the nearside lane and there was a honda jaz doing 50 or 60 in the middle lane there were no other cars around and i just went past it and it started beeping and flashing it lights i then remained in that lane for another 3 miles or so
i just could see the need for me to go across 3 lanes to go round it and then back another 3 lanes to lane 10 -
Its ok they were just warning you to beware of the uneducated danger on wheels in the middle lane. Just because they are stupid doesn't mean they aren't nice at heart.0

That'd be about right. The Jazz should have been in lane 1. Yet he thought you were in the wrong!Near a tree by a river, there's a hole in the ground.
