    Hi rigsby,

I don't think I'd use mince that was that old especially if it's not looking as it should do. From your description, personally I'd bin it.

On the other hand, if I knew that it was in date and had been stored properly and looked ok, then I would give it a sniff, and if it smelt ok then cook/taste a tiny bit and if it tasted ok then I'd probably eat it. Saying that, it's really your decision as people on an internet forum can't decide for you without being able to see the actual food.

Once you've had more input I'll add your thread to the Quick Questions on food safety / sell by / use by dates thread.

I forgot about some mince meat i had in the fridge until just now.

Can you clarify please - mincemeat (mince pie filling) or minced meat (such as minced beef or pork)?

I thought the OP meant the sweet one in the jar as well, I'd have said it would be fine.
I wouldn't risk minced meat though.

Me too ;) I've never heard of meat on the turn being described as "sticky".

I put the mince in the bin (better save than sorry).

Better money down the drain than an intensive care stay!

If it's started to go brown - out. If it smells slightly sweet - out. There is a cat test (if the cat won't touch it - out) but useless if you don't have a cat! If it passes the two tests above, and you are planning to do something with it that involves boiling it for a long time, you may be OK, but if you're at all doubtful, put it out for the local wildlife.

Not really, going brown is just the blood oxidising and had no relationship to food safety

These days everyone thinks meat should be red, hence supermarkets using red lights to enhance the colouring, and why properly aged meat is not often seen

Brownish is perfectly normal, and brown mince is perfectly useable [it goes brown when cooked anyway]
