There's all sorts of different kinds of mould. Cheese tends to grow mostly safe moulds which is why you can trim it and eat the mould free part and you can scoop the mould off jam too and eat the rest. Other foodstuffs grow different moulds though and many of these can make you unwell, especially if you're in a vunerable group like very young or very old, or have had recent immuno-suppressing treatment of some sort. Some moulds are very toxic. Even if you trim off these moulds the toxins they've produced can have spread into the surrounding areas of the food.

Also a Best Before date is of course just that and means the foodstuff is generally safe after but will deteriorate in taste and texture. BUT it does not mean "Fine to eat even if it looks or smells peculiar". Mould falls under the "peculiar" category here.

So my advice is to bin it, yup. Just not worth it.

  • My rule of thumb is 'If it fizzes, bin it', if that helps. I'd probably bin it, to be honest.
Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!
  • Cheese yes, anything else is a no from me. Even then, I would use the carefully trimmed cheese for cooking, just to be sure.

Can I just point out that while cooking will mostly kill bacteria and mould, yes, it won't normally destroy any toxins that have already been produced by the above?
