If it is a use by date it might be best to avoid being so far past it. However if it is a best before then it should be fine but at the end of the day it is up to you.

I've found some Oatibix Porridge sachets at the back of the cupboard dated 10/08. Would you eat them? Is 18 months out of date too much?

I would if the sachets are still sealed. What's the worst that could happen? They might taste a bit stale, nothing worse

I'd make a bowl of porridge or a batch of hobnobs and see what they tasted like - if stale-tasting junk them. I made some hobnobs last week with some oats which were in date but they tasted really stale (OH didn't notice and chomped the hobnobs anyway) but it's not always easy to know if things will taste OK until you use them. I don't think old oats will do anything nasty to you but they just won't taste yummy.

LOL, at the moment I have hay fever and I cannot taste anything anyway so I could not tell. I guess I have nothing to lose, they are in those little paper sealed sachets. If you never hear from me again after tomorrow morning you know why..... and then you'll know never to eat 18 month old porridge oats.

I did want to but just was not quite sure!!

    Thanks.

I would certainly eat them providing there was no bugs or anything (which im sure there isnt :) )

I'll merge this with the food safety thread :) Let us know how you get on.

I've just pulled a (smoked) gammon joint out of the fridge that I plan on cooking today. I have never looked at the back of the packaging before but gave it a glance this time.

It states that before serving make sure it is piping hot all the way through - and - Do Not Reheat! Now, I was planning on using it this week (as I have often done), the "main" meal today, tomorrow would be cold slices and later in the week I was going to cube the leftovers to use in a pasta bake. I have reheated gammon in various recipes before and don't ever remember anyone being ill afterwards . . . .

Have we just been lucky - and I should have known better - or is it just a case of them being too careful...again?
