After a slight muffin mishap, I saw the thread for homemade hobnobs & decided to give these a go. On checking I had porridge oats I can see they went out of date on 01/06/09. Do they go stale? They are in a box, but it has been opened some while.
Thanks0 -
Kmeast i would go ahead and use them - i never check the dates on things like that. Perhaps start with a small half a batch? (so if they do go wrong you don't waste too much ingredient?) I think they will be perfect thoughA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Hi all,
Just a quickie, I picked up a packet of hot dogs off local market that were unrefrigerated that said keep in the fridge(I should've checked while I was there!!!!), it hasn't been a hot day today.....would you chuck em....or just cook them to within an inch of their lives?
Any advice appreciated!0 -
Hi Katy
How do they look and smell? If you suspect they are ok you could cook them very thoroughly obviously and try a small piece? If of course you are in any doubt by smell , bin them.
I'll add this to the food safety thread later
thanks

We need to get back to trusting our own common sense about food, we`re so disabled by supermarket sell-by`s, etc., and so much good food gets wasted as a result. Re your hot dogs - I would first sniff and feel - if they felt `slimey` and smell sickly, I`d dump them, if not, cook `em thoroughly, them sniff again, and taste - up to you, but do develop your own senses, where food`s concerned.0

retailers can have refrigerated foods on display for sale for one period of up to 4 hours.
it's difficult to go by look, as you won't be able to see micro-organisms! although u can tell if the food is spoiled, not all bacteria spoil food!0 -
I have just been looking in my freezer and noticed I have a bag of prawns that say best before end of feb 2010. Would it be ok for me to eat them still. Packaging is airtight?became debt free December 060

Frozen food can't go off, so they'll be fine from that POV. Stuff that's been frozen for several months or more past its best before date might not be as tasty (I find prawns tend to go a bit woolly textured if they're frozen for a very long time) but yours are only a couple of months over and will be absolutely fine.
Go ahead and enjoy your prawns!Back after a very long break!0 -
In my opinion they will be fine. But that is only my opinion. I'd eat them happily. To be extra cautious maybe defrost them in the fridge and slightly overcook them (although they might go a bit rubbery - up to you) but def don't throw out!!Since starting again after beanie: June 2016: Child development DVDs, Massive Attack tickets.
