I have to agree with going by look and smell - I think the dates might be a great guide to buying food but once I'm at home I always check stuff before cooking it regardless of what the dates say.

  • It's usually difficult to smell if it has gone bad when it's all marinaded, but if you smell an odd sour smell, well you should know the smell of mouldy food.

Sorry didn't mean to put you off your meal, but from what you have said I would eat it, as long as it was in the fridge overnight.

If it has been out of the fridge, I would be a little concerned, but if it has been in the fridge, then trust your eyes and nose!

Yesterday (Easter Sunday) I cooked a HUGE topside joint. I specially ordered it from the butchers and it was to feed us (2 adults + 7 children) plus 6 adult guests in one sitting + extras. I think it was a full cow!

Unfortunatly due to a family bereavement only us 9 sat to eat it Sunday.

We have had another good go at it today but I am still left with about half left.

How long will it keep? My mam is oldschool and says it will keep for 7 days from the fridge until it goes "green" and smells. My dad said "don't listen to her, more than 48 hours is risking it".

    Any advice?

I'd keep it in the fridge for 2 or 3 days. If you'll be sick of it by then, why not slice and freeze. Add the gravy, too, then you'll have a simple meal for later :j

I have to say I like to be a bit cautious with meat and would probably only keep it in the fridge for a couple of days. Couldn't you slice it or cube it and then freeze it for having in sandwiches, reheating covered in gravy or making a casserole at a later date. If there is that much of it left I expect you would be a bit fed up with eating all now anyway!

    Hi vader,

I would normally keep leftover beef for three days maximum providing it's been kept chilled in the fridge. If you don't want to use it immediately or aren't going to get a chance to use it soon, you could cut it into meal sized portions and freeze it. This thread has some suggestions for using it up:

    leftover beef ???

I'll add your thread to the food safety thread later as your question may help others.

I bought a couple of trays of lean minced beef on Thursday and used one but forgot the other was still in the fridge. I normally split them into four to put in the freezer on the day I buy them but only got round to doing it on Sunday. it still looked nice and red and seemed to smell OK, but as I was putting the last portion in the bag i noticed that it was quite white on the bottom. I suppose it could have been fat but this mince is really not very fatty at all so I just wondered what you guys thought. Is it OK do you think or should I have binned it?
  • We had beef yesterday and had loads left over, I've sliced up some and portioned it in freezer bags with the leftover gravy, the rest that didn't go in sandwiches today, I've minced in the food processor and frozen that as well. Not sure what I'm going to do with the minced up bit yet but at least it's in 'stasis' while I decide. The leftover veg got got a quick blitz too and will be added to mash for bubble and squeak or to a homemade soup.

I wouldn't leave it sitting in the fridge for more than a couple of days either tbh
