We had a powercut and it was out for almost 48 hours. The stuff in the freezer seems ok, its still frozen hard, but I have a tub of pate in the fridge that my OH was really looking forward to. How long does pate keep and would the fridge being off spoil it ?
Whether the pate was still OK to eat would have depended on how many times the fridge door was opened and closed while the power was off. If it was still cool I'd have eaten it, no problem but I do have an iron constitution due, I expect, to having been brought up in a household with no fridge and no antibacterial cleaning-products until I was about 8 or 9.0 -
I know there's always someone after similar advice but just wondering what the general opinion is of some OOD salsa it's actually a month out of date and has been in the fridge. It's not been opened and contains the usual culprits found in salsa. It smells fine and tastes fine if a little tangy.
I'm planning on cooking it in an enchilada sauce anyway so am I going to strike everyone down?
I hate use by dates cos if it didn't have one I would'nt even question it...
TIA

Hi Miecherox:hello:
It's a tricky one.... what are the ingredients? Just wondering what preservative it has. If you are in any doubt I would bin it - sometimes it's not worth giving everyone the runs? It is of course your choice - but personally if after sniffing it i had doubts, it would go in the bin.
I'll add your thread to the food safety one later to keep the questions together
you could always make another type of enchilada sauce?
thanks

If it is 1 month past a USE BY date i would say no to eating it.
If it is 1 month past a BEST BEFORE date I would say yes to eating it.You're not your * could have not of * Debt not dept *0 -
Thanks Zip,
It's got stabiliser xanthan gum in it but the rest are plain ingredients, tomato, onion, tomato puree, sugar, sunlower oil, lemon juice, coriander, garlic puree, minced chilli, jalapeno peppers & black pepper... It's a fresh one not a jar.#118 DFW Debt freely Christmas 2012 Challenge0 -
It is display until/use by 03 Mar.
I wouldn't mind but I only paid 25p for it :rotfl:oh how you've all changed me!#118 DFW Debt freely Christmas 2012 Challenge0 -

I definitely wouldn't risk using something a month after the use by date. That xanthan gum is used to control the texture, it's not a preservative. Bin it, or you'll be sorry0

Thankyou both, it is in the bin. Am currently using my culinary skills to make enchiladas without salsa!
