Hello,
I had 2 rump steaks in the freezer (which were frozen on the day they were to be 'used by') I took them out to defrost and yesterday morning I marinated them (with peppercorns). Unfortunately over the course of the day I fell rather ill and couldn't eat them last night.
Does anyone know whether they would be OK to eat today for tea? On the Food Standards Agency website it says to eat defrosted food within 1-2 days but my hubby is adamant that it in unsafe as it is now past it's use by date.
They have been stored in a sealed plastic tub since yesterday morning.
Seems a shame to chuck it as it was pricey! (well it was reduced but still!!)
Thanks for any help

i would say they would be fine...smell them ...where they in the fridge ?...hthonwards and upwards0

After my experience yesterday with an off leg of lamb, before the use by, I would say see how it smells! Steak should be fine, have a look-it it smells rancid then no, but if it smells ok then should be grand. I usually buy my meat from the butchers (so no use by date) or whoopsie from waitrose-and I freeze, defrost and use a couple days later so past the date on those.
I would check the smell and if ok-yum rump steakI love it with potato dauphinoise

Marinades usually act like a form of preservative so I'd say they will be fine, especially if you've been marinading them in the fridge. It's very, very easy to know when meat has gone off by the smell, it's unmistakeable0

you have to be careful with marinades
as some break down tougher cuts of meat and make them more tender
and when you get into the realms of fish with lemon, or vinegar based marinades, it actually starts to cook the flesh,
but i do agree you will know by the smell0 -
Hi MWA:hello:
I would say it is absolutely fine. Go with your instinct and give it a good sniff. If you have any doubt don't eat it of course.:p
I'll add this to the food safety thread later
thanks:)

Disregard all use by/sell by/best before etc dates and use your eyes and nose. we all managed to get by without food poisoning without them....
If it looks off but smells ok it probably is ok.....if its gone over, trust me, your nose will tell you.
If you want to err on the side of caution, cook it over medium to well .1/11/06 -1/06/07 BSC #42
