The basics pasta sauce isn't that nice, it's kind of thin, bland and a bit synthetic. One of the basics items I don't normally buy. However, their regular own brand pasta sauces are really good. Not as cheap as the basics one, but still much less than brand name and handy to have in the cupboard.0

I think that a quick pasta sauce (onion, garlic, tomato, vegetables) is far tastier than a ready made one
I'll add this to the pasta sauce thread so that you may have more inspiration next time

I find I take in all the smells when cooking so that when it comes to eating the food i cant often taste it very well. Is there something in this? If somebody else cooks something for me then I can taste it ok. Is there also something in eating outside at a different temperature and in fresh air that helps you take in the taste and aroma?0

just opened the 24 p value tomato pasta sauce and it smells ok, however the consistency is horrible, it wobbles like jelly, i'm not gonna even try it. i'm opening the mushroom sauce instead which was about 65p or something and a bit smaller, but i prefer the quality!!!0 -

I'm just thinking -lemon juice, oil, spices, chilli, garlic, vinegar...I've got all those in my kitchen.
I'm definitely going to give it a goIt's a big jar so will do lots, so I might even freeze some of it.
I normally do everything from scratch and definitely wouldn't buy the jar myself - but hey, for free, worth it! :T"Stay Wonky":D

Hi,
I am hoping someone can help me. I'm on a strict budget this week, I have about £7.00 left until Friday to feed both me and my b/f  I have loads of pasta in, but i never know what kind of sauce to use/make to make it tasty - any suggestions? My b/f loves chillies and sauces with a kick in them...
Thanks in advance

ps i don't want to spend more than £2.50 :shocked:0 -
Basic tomato sauce - soften chopped onion in a little oil, add garlic, dried herbs, tin of tomatoes and simmer. Add chopped chillies for a hot variation. If you've got any, use fresh torn basil instead of dried herbs.
Cheese sauce: Make a white sauce with flour and butter, add milk and then grated cheese. A dollop of double cream is lovely, but not essentialAdd garlic and chopped, fried bacon to make it Carbonara.
Just about all those ingredients you can buy at Value or Smartprice level and will make a big batch."Stay Wonky":D

That's pretty much what I'd suggest as a start - just mess around with the herbs etc til you find something tasty. Otherwise, with your budget, you could easily get a couple of jars of ready-made sauce, good for a couple of meals each (not very OS, I know)0 -
Thanks so much, the tomato based sauce sounds fab, and i only need to buy some garlic and tinned tomatoes, yippee! :j
The cream based one sounds amazing but very fattening, and i'm not a fan of creamy things but thanks anyway!!!
Cheers! :beer:0 -
add a couple of dried/ fresh chopped chillies to your sauce for a kick, and poundshops almost always have tinned olives/tuna/anchovies etc that you can add for a puttanesca, tonno sauce!! try adding a grated carrot or courgette for bulk and nutrition, only about another 15p!!!£5000 debt cleared thanks to MSE advice :money:0
