  • I often add it to Broccoli & Stilton soup when it is well over its sell-by date. If I feel at all guilty about it, and fear I may poison someone, then I stick it in the freezer, forget about it and then take it out a couple of months later and stick it in the soup! No-one has died yet and most people claim the soup is delicious. If only they knew!!!

If its been kept cool and wrapped up - I'd say it was fine to go ahead and enjoy it .... occasionally it can dry out if left unwrapped.

If its a bit dry or even very dry and you want to eat it on crackers - take off any remaining rind and put it in a small bowl and pour over a glass of port or red wine and leave for 24 hours then mash with a fork - the dry cheese will have magically soaked up the liquid and become moist and delicious again. :p Nom nom!

I always check out the 'reduced' section in the supermarket for cheeses - as the sell by dates are usually well before the cheese has actually matured - especially for soft cheeses like Brie or Cambenbert which such be soft, flavoursome and runny not firm & bland :)

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Like everyone else I'd happily eat it! If it had been opened and really become discoloured then perhaps not - tho' I think I'd still use it in soup! Must go and check my fridge....

Taste a tiny bit. If it's off it will taste rancid, but it should be perfectly OK if it's been stored in a fridge at less than 5 degrees. We often keep marg or dripping for months and it's never been grotty.

Aye scoff it down! As with any cheese don't always cut from the same side, move around it, that is if it lasts that long!

If it's excessively moist or browning or the blue veins are runny then it should not really be eaten.
