The Giving Up Smoking Thread - Part 3

Morning all - I stayed away as much as I could yesterday as I was finding things so hard. Every 5 minutes I wanted to smoke. I ended up eating so much and its always at night.
Today I have thought about smoking, but not craved one - which is to me a huge difference. (to be fair Ive only been up an hour! Haha)
I really keep thinking about the goal at the end. Its the only thing that stopped me from going to the shop - I dont want to be a smoker when I breastfeed my baby. Having to change clothes each time I smoke - having to leave baby whilst I nip out for a fag.
Its so hard but thats the only reason stopping me.
Everyone seems to be doing well. Kiwi and Erme keep at it guys!
This is last day that hubby is off so I knw tomorrow will be a struggle again, so I plan on cleaning - but to be honest - Ive done so much recently there isnt much more I can clean! lol
Happy Monday guys

Afternoon everyone
Well I changed to the 16 hr (25mg) patches and am a wee bit concerned. When I had the 24hr patches on I would usually get a bit of irritation on my skin when I first put it on, but I dont seem to be getting anything with these new patches...am wondering if this is because they are a different brand?
Or maybe I dont need them anymore??
Havent really had many cravings, thought about cigs once or twice but usually distract myself with something else.
Must say, its very nice getting in the car and not smelling stale smoke! :j

Hello everyone,
How are we getting on today??
I have to say I am feeling a bit restless today - whether thats because there isnt a lot on at work or the giving up......not sure!
Certainly do not feel like having a ciggy - just kinda hovering about a lot and trying to keep busy!
Trying to be really good with the food - as already wanted to loose weight before giving up so certainly dont wanna put any more on!!!
All in all - not a bad Monday.
Hope you guys are all doing well - Ellie totally agree with you about getting in the clean car.
Keep going eveyone remember to keep looking at that list of why you dont want this when you feel like you cant carry on!

Hello people,
Can i please join? A little about me, I've smoked for 25yrs and the longest i gave up for was 4months and then with a beer I started again. I've currently cut down to about 20 fags per week and regularly go 5 days without, and then smoke 20 in a day! I've had some serious (smoking related) illness that means I have to finally get a grip once and for all.
I hate the cost, the smell, the guilt, the heartburn, the health implications, the damage its already done.
While i'm doing this i've decided to stay away from alcohol as well, the 2 go hand in hand for me. I'm just petrified of putting on weight, even though i know giving the fags up is the best thing I can do for my health. As soon as i've put weight on, i go running for the fags.
anyway that's a little about me

Hiya Maz - well done on deciding to quit! Thats fab news and reat that you are thinking already about the implications of smoking - ie. giving up booze and trying not to put weight on. Its great that you can go for so long without smoking, not so great about the binge smoking, but hey ho - shows you have will power!
How do you plan on stopping? Cold turkey? patches? meds? etc
Good luck, keep posting and keep up the good work xLoan finished Sep 2010 - HSBC CC - WAS £750 now £0! Natwest CC - WAS £1600 now £100 - Overdraughts to be worked on! WILL be debt free by mid 2011!!!

Welcome along Maz - Well Done for making the decision - I have tried giving up before and did for 8 or so months not really sure why I started again but this time Im in for the long haul!!!!
Once you have made the decision yourself to quit and are doing it for you - you can really see the positives of quitting and that is what has helped me along - so far.
Well Done you on your first day - and come back in here and have a read and a moan whenever you need xxx0 -
hey Maz  welcome
good for you for making the decision. Sue will send you a lovely welcome email with lots of tips about how to cope and also how not to put on the weight. I have found exercising & drinking water has been helpful, I also am trying a tip from a couple of days ago which was to have lots of smaller portioned meals (so I'm going to have an apple in a minute and then at tea time have about 1/2 of what I used to eat) I've found eater smaller amounts but regularly has been helpful. I also have realised I eat to comfort myself - as I did with smoking - so having foods in that I find comforting stops me from rushing out to the shop to buy a bag of crisps and a bar of choc (had more car troubles again today - back to the mechanics after spending £1200 on it last week  - and I nearly went to the shop for a load of carp but instead had a muller biscuit corner yogurt and a mug of mocha at home instead

16 days today and getting a lot easier. I still have my wobbly moments but the more you resist them, the easier it gets the next time, Ive found. Well, once you get past the worse first few days that is.
I got the free quit smoking pack from the chemist today. It hasn't been promoted much, but most supermarkets/chemist chains have them. It's got all sorts of motivational stuff in there, and a 'fiddle toy', and you can send off for a free 7 day pack of nicotine patches. So worth asking if you are thinking ofgiving up, or if you want something to help you along if you already have. I've been giving myself a sticker every night from the pack, silly really, but it makes you feel 'well done'.
My mouth still feels dry a lot of the time - I keep having to get up at 3am for a glass of water as my poor throat is sticking together - but I do feel better generally, and I no longer look like I'm 92! I'm back down to only 72 now, just a few more decades to go till I hit where I should be, lol.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

Hi everyone and welcome to Maz
I'm posting a cautionary tale!
I was feeling quite confident. I'd been out for a meal, been with a friend who smokes, dealt with the odd annoyance with DH (who is nearly perfect but . . . ).
We went to Ikea today - big treat of the week was Ikea meatballs. We went back to the car, unloaded the shopping and DH went to take the trolley back.
I reached in my bag for a cig.:eek::eek: Fortunately, I didn't have any. If I had, I think I would have lit up on auto-pilot and then been totally devastated.
On whyquit.com, they warn about needing to go right through the seasons and all situations before you can let your guard down. I now believe them!
Each new thing I've done before now, I've thought about the possible triggers and been prepared. I got a bit too complacent. No harm done, except that it shook me that that subconscious part of my brain took over for a minute.
Lesson learnt.:D
Have a good smoke-free evening. We can do it together :beer:But how can you know what you want till you get what you want and you see if you like it?0 -
Thankyou for the warm welcome people,
I'm just going cold turkey but do use niquitin minis when i've been out and so have dragged them out of the cupboard.
Unfortunately Salski, i binge everything, fags, beer, exercise, I'lldo really well and then just fall off the wagon with a big bang.
The problem with the fags is due to being ill and giving the fags up,everyone is really proud and me and so no-one knows that i'm still having binges with them. Everyone thinks that its only when i have a drink, which it is for the most part and so to compensate I've been drinking more. Hence I'm now in a mess with it all.
Day 1 and i feel fine and only had a couple of craves, which considering I got some sad news about a friend this morning would normally have had me running straight to the shop.
I think a bath, book and early night is in order for me tonight, the path of least resistance i think.
thanks maz x0
