  • Hi all, I decided i needed to quit after having a bad chest & cough for 2 months. The DR sent me for a chest x-ray, opposite me was a women no older than myself with an oxygen tank. I took one look & thought that could be me. A picture of my two lovely grandchildren came into my head & the thought of them seeing me like that. I felt horror. I came out of the hospital & threw my cigs in the nearest bin.
My reason for posting now...i am starting to crave a ciggy...HELP. I have tried & failed in the past & need support not to give in. I know this is a bit long but it has already helped me by explaining my reason for quitting in the first place.

Maybe having a picture of your grandkids with you all the time would help. Take it out and look at it when the urge comes along?

Stay strong, if you are on day 40 then you are doing fantastically:T
Think again about your reasons for stopping. Two lovely grandchildren. This lady with an oxygen tank, chances are that she has to be permanently 'attached' to oxygen when at home. This means leads trailing around which is scary for children. Then there's the oxygen pump which sounds a bit like bellows, constant day and night. Going out is a major excursion ensuring enough oxygen is taken and so forth. Yes, I've visited people like that and also a couple unable to stop coughing for more than a minute or two at a time.

I'm not trying to frighten you, just pointing out some of the negatives. I found that reading this thread did help me to cope with lots of good ideas for distractions/change of routines.

Also found some of the links on the front page of interest (NTC, one of these links explains the 5 stages which include the 'doing a deal' stage which is the trying to put off until tomorrow).

I am only on day 24 but have come so far in the last 3 weeks or so that the thing which stops me smoking is having to do it all again:D

Hang in there, things will get better and Sue will be along soon with her pearls of wisdom.

You have done so well getting this far - try some distraction techniques - go for a walk round the block or end of street and back. I walked round our garden up and down or took the dog for a quick walk.
As soon as you get the feeling - do something else other than what you are doing when you get a craving if you know what i mean:)
As Lotus said - look at pictures of the grandkids often if they are your motivation
    Good luck & keep going
    hugs

I totally agree with Chrissie. It does help to take up a new hobby and a hobby you would not think of doing if you were smoking. I had been on the patches for 4 weeks and decided to do the rest cold turkey. I have to admit I was really struggling but I decided to take up running. I am now a member of a running club and have entered various of races so not only did I get a new hobby, I got a whole new set of friends. So it is either smoking or running and like I said before I choose running.

Needstochange, well done for getting through the first day. They always say that the first 3 days is the hardest. You are just getting used to getting out to the "habit". I can't remember if Allen Carr described it that way as I read the book years ago. Just remember that when the cravings start....they only last a few minutes. Try to get into a new habit...when the cravings start get up and do something to take your mind of it.

I also used to go to a smoking cessation class years ago and one of the tips that they gave me was to drink water when you get the craving and they should go away.

Morning all, thanks for your encouragement & support it really helped me last night.
Smiley Tiger take up a new hobby...well i spent hours on here reading through the old threads, does that count lol!. It kept me busy anyway & if you all did it so can i.
I also have another good reason to stay off the cigs...My daughter gets married at the end of the month & there's no way i want a pic of me with a fag in my hand. Just another positive for me not to give in. By the time that comes round i'll have been smoke free for TEN weeks, what a great incentive that is for me.
well off to work now. Have a good smoke free day everyone. x

40 days and you want a fag are you insane woman :eek::eek: :rotfl::rotfl:

Do you really want to go through stopping again and going through the misery :eek:

Pick a fag end up out the street and sniff it, should be enough to put you off wanting to smell like that ;)

You are no longer an addict

Be strong and consider yourself told off :D
