Circus I an only tell you how I got through that first hurdle. I'd been keeping a log of when I smoked, what triggered it and how it felt. That was enough to cut me down no end ;)

At 8.30 am on 19th December, I took two puffs of a cig, looked at it and stubbed it out . . . carefully, and put it back on the ashtray and slapped a patch on my arm. Part of me was scared but another part managed to decide I wouldn't finish it . . . yet. The whole of that day it sat in the ashtray and every time I wanted it I somehow said "not yet. I'll just load the dishwasher/peel the potatoes/clean my teeth/read a bit more of the stop smoking thread". By bedtime I hadn't touched it. However, I was spaced out, my heart was thumping. I took the patch off and went to bed. By morning I felt better and realised that I had cut down my smoking so much over the past few weeks that a 21 mg patch was giving me an OD of nicotine

I cut a patch in half, shoved the ashtray in a drawer (still with the half smoked cig in it and played the same game again. I was still not saying "I have quit", just "not yet". After that, it was not so bad but I still didn't commit to 'never again' for several days - by which time it was not worth breaking the quit and having to go through it all again.

I found that by not asking too much of myself and taking it a craving at a time, I got through. I'm still not complacent about it but I think about smoking less and less and feel better in myself.

Good luck with it. I hope this helps. If it doesn't, someone else's advice may - we are all different. You've got a team cheering you on here.

PS. The ashtray and half smoked cig did eventually leave the house together with two half packs and a full one + three lighters . I've since found and disposed of five more lighters from various pockets and bags :D
But how can you know what you want till you get what you want and you see if you like it?

Hello all - sorry I dont know how to multi-quote so Im rushing the thread along with my lengthy posts! Day 2 was much easier than I hoped. I think it was because I was expecting it to be really bad so made sure I was busy all day.
Again I am expecting tomorrow to be bad so plan on doing some shopping, walking the dog and off to church! Everyone is doing really well and I am using this thread as an incentive - I dont want to post that I have given in :D
Anywho - off to bed (if in doubt - sleep! haha) and here is to day 3 :D

  • Evening all,

Circus... I use patches ..and suck loads of ice pops [ or icepoles ] and also keep rereading this thread!

Have had a good day and keeping busy, not without a little craving after lunch, but drinking loads of water soon sent old nic on his way! :D This evening sorted old paperwork, and have a stack of stuff to shred next time i feel a 'crave' !

Keep on claiming your fresh air folks, and don't let 'nic' back in ! Together we can do this!

That is a really fabulous post, Tricia!
And anybody who [STRIKE]stops[/STRIKE] cuts down smoking 6 days before Christmas means business! Most people would've said: 'I'll do it after Christmas'

  • Evening, Caz. Good to see you're getting on well too.

I don't really have cravings, but I am going to get some of those ice-pops................might stop me stuffing my face (although it is usually satsumas/apples/celery/carrots)

My biggest problem now is that I can taste food better so I crave all the time, not necessarily unhealthy food, but goddamn. I'm ready to propose to food it tastes so good, I was in raptures about home made ratatouille today. It's got to the point that i won't cook anything that isn't home made as it's just not worth enjoying. I'm going to be the size of a house and seriously obsessed with good food by the end of the year ;)
But hey I'll be happy! :rotfl:

LOL that made me chuckle to myself

To be honest, I have chucked out all my cheapo plastic lighters, but I have kept my Zippo's and my metal lighters as I have quite a few expensive ones (some of which I bought when i lost the last lol) i will eventually throw them away, maybe one at a time lol
