Is anyone watching the Biggest Loser btw?

I am watching it but I am not enjoying it at all - the last one i watched they were given 'temptation' encouraged to eat cake and then given 4lb off at weigh in?? Didn't make sense to me just seemed to be exacerbating existing food demons rather than dealing with the issue of food denial and binging. also they were all really upset over not losing much weight, but they've been working out like crazy and no one, not even the trainers, mentioned that they have prob been building muscle under the fat.

That's my understanding of SE too (except the 1/3 that isn't superfree can be red/green or a mix, like EE).

Considering I think I know the plan very well by now, I'm not following it very well at all! :o  :o Talk about best intentions, I went back to to pilates last night with a friend... when we got there the cupboard where the floor mats were kept was jammed, so the class couldn't take place, and because my friend was all wound up from a stressful day at work, we somehow ended up in the pub... and instead of ordering a low syn drink I ended up drinking a pint of guiness!! So annoyed because it didn't even cross my mind to order a lower syn drink

I'm hopeing that going back to class tonight will result in Much Better Motivation.. else I might have to ask Blackers to Beat It Together With Me :rotfl: :p:D

Yup thats How I was given the explanation of success express....the 1/3 that WAS superfree becomes red/green or a mix. but still 1 HEA/HEB

Its funny how even though we KNOW 'what were supposed to do' our brain somehow switches off and does the opposite smiley-angelic017.gif

I find it really difficult to have third superfrees somedays too. Not being picky, but I didn't think bananas were superfree? I think they're like parsnips (fruit and veg but not superfree).

bananas are superfree but not superspeed

I don't understand the 'temptation' thingy either on biggest loser ...... I wouldn't want someone messing with my head if I was trying to lose weight and be good !

Also, I wonder how those gym sessions are affecting them? I've got a fair bit to lose but I'm not as heavy as most of them and a session like that would half kill me ! I was sure one of them was going to collapse this week after going up the tower !

All credit to them though, I'm taking a leaf out of their commitment book :D.

Mrs M, your trek sounds fantastic ! Have you got a 'just giving' page or is it something that can only be done in person? Just wondering because some people on here might like to have a look at it (me included :D).

Lunch update ........ having quiche made with peppers, mushrooms, red onion, eggs and fat free cottage cheese. Will grill a coupla quorn sausages too and pop a bit of chilli mustard on them.

-but me being me I decided to see how much of me I could wedge into it -well to be more accurate -to -hubby said it looked fine -and then spoilt the moment by adding "and at least you won't need to iron it!!" rotflmao.gif -when he realised what he had said he was all *emmm oohh no I didn't mean it like that* luckily for him I was to busy chuckling... ,,,,

Nope, no true answer. The generic response appears to be 'any excercise is better than no excercise' which although technically true just doesn't cut it with me. I don't want to look like a fat person that's lost weight - and no disrespect to any target members or big losers but with most of them you can tell that they used to be hefty. I still don't feel as though the plan is Scientific enough, but I don't want to open that can of worms!

It's one of the reasons that I keep mentioning doing weight lifting and recommending it to everybody. I'm sick and tired of hearing people (mostly women it must be said) saying 'I dont want to get big muscles' - that's just ignorance coming from lack of education on the subject. It won't. It will burn more fat than cardio ever will.

If doing resistance work three times a week would create big muscles we would all be Olympians and I'd be selling the advice for megabucks...

*Grump* I really want to know -I enjoy both aerobic and anaerobic exercise, and now I'm getting back on my feet I don't want to be burning muscle not fat  Might have a good google... Although ta for the reminder to do weights *eyes weights in the corner up with suspicion* I don't enjoy it, but if it burns fat I'd do quite a lot of things :rotfl:

Yeah, I really didn't get that.. the one I saw this week had 40 chocolate eggs (creme egg sized) in which some of them had "1lb weight loss" (i.e. 1lb added to their actual real life loss) and one had £1000... so needless to say they ALL GORGED on the eggs, some even going on after the £1000 had been won, just to find the last 1lb... so one bloke had 10 chocolate eggs bust to find the last 1lb... I mean... duuuh!

Still, I am mega impressed they are all losing so much each week. :T

I think I may have hit on a great idea to save ironing there..we should all just wear clothes that tight we stretch them straight *ohh hold on, I have been doing that for years :rotfl:not that I iron anyway .... my stuff is washed and hung so i don't have too -I haven't touched and iron in about 10years :rotfl:....although hubby gets to iron his uniform every week :p
majjakk -im with you, I watch their workouts and sit thinking that I would need and air ambulance :o as for those steps they ran up this week .....
Thankyou so much for asking about the trek.. I have a link to my just giving page in my profile details, I don't think I can put it in my signature on mse...

right I have had my lunch and hubby has knocked off early -so we are off for the water, milk n cottage cheese :D
    Have a lovely afternoon all

  • Wootball, and anyone else interested, I hope I'm not perpetuating a subject which will result in said can of worms exploding, but if I can cautiously discuss this a bit more because its really interesting to the geek in me:

    http://www.weightlossforall.com/low-calories-exercise-problems.htm

    http://www.burnthefat.com/Very-Low-calorie-Diet.html

Admittedly its only the results of 30 minutes of googling (on top of a background of nurtition and exercise physiology modules of my equine degree) but I think the message most places are giving are that on a physiology level, lipase is the fat burning hormone, with leptin being another hormone associated with the regulation of white adipose tissue (subcutaneous fat). "Starvation mode" is your body adapting to a low calorie diet, and reducing the production of these, which slows or stops fat burning. I haven't quite figured out the physiological how (which bugs me) but it seems to be claimed that this leads to the burning of lean body tissue (primarily skeletal muscle) and causing what you were talking about Wootball, with a "skinny fat person" who weighs less net weight but still carries plenty of fat... am I correct as far as you understand so far?

The general consensus is that this "starvation mode" happens at a relatively high calorie defecit, and that the actual level of calories for this happening to each of us is unique, but as a rough guide it looks like people seem to think its 1000 to 1200 calories - which if you are using your free food, healthy extras and syns, you shouldn't be going under. And that ultimately, by providing sufficient nutrients with cardio and resistance training, burns fat not muscle.

Woot, I think you probably already knew all or most of the above, but it was an interesting exercise for me to do, and just proves to me the importance of a) exercise, and b) eating enough, including your syns and healthy extras, and having a varied diet.

Which we all knew anyway, right? ;) well, it was just nice for me to confirm it all for myself if nothing else :D
