    Hello folks,

I joined SW on Thursday. Ummm, my "baby weight" is now 6 years old. I did lose 3 stone of it, but then I was widowed, so it went back on. I now weigh precisely the same as I did 6 years ago when I started my post baby diet (ds was born in November 2004). I managed to damage the ligaments in my knee last year too - I banged my leg on a table. Not even a bruise to show for it, but it was 10 months before I could walk properly without a lot of pain. I'm now walking ds to school weather permitting (15 minutes each way twice a day), which I hope will help to shift some of my excess weight.

I like to cook, so I'm looking forward to sharing recipes. I'm 44 in May and I need to lose about 8 stone. My husband was supposedly the "thin fit and healthy one" in our relationship, so it was a bit of a shock when he died. I would like our son to have at least one parent around until he is older, so I need to make an effort now to be healthier.

    Nice to meet you all.

Welcome - whatever your reasons, motivation or plan just know that you can do it if you really want to. It's not easy and will take hard work and a long time, but you can and will do it. All the best to you.

As for me, I went to the gym as expected but got a little carried away! Ended up doing the cheeky 6km that I wanted to but then decided to do 30 minutes of weightlifting (the best fat loss exercise you will ever find by the way, don't be afraid of it you'll lose more weight by lifting than you ever will by running) and 30 minutes of swimming. Just absolutely devoured a savoury rice with bacon and cheese and a big bowl of superspeed soup :D

Can I ask a really silly question?

I am on extra easy , its about the 1/3 plate of superfree really. Yesterday we had a quorn vegetable chilli. Most of the chilli was vegetables but these look a lot less when cooked down, Veg probably made up 3/4 or more of the chilli precooking (more if you can count the passata). If I ate a bowl of this with a jacket potato would I still need an extra 3rd of the plate salad/veg etc or would the 3/4 chili and 1/4 potato be ok....does that make sense?

I'm a red and green girl at heart and don't really get the extra easy plan despite being assured by all and sundry that well its really easy ! :rotfl: but when its been talked about in our class, our consultant has suggested adding superfree veg to say the sw beef curry to make it (qualify) superfree with little effort iyswim ? but to answer your question, it can't hurt can it, to have the veg chilli but add extra superfree ?

I think I'll be the resident booze expert:beer:! All spirits (vodka, gin, whisky) with a slimline / diet mixer are 2.5 syns for a 25ml. Red and dry white wine is approx 8.5 syns for a large (250ml) glass. Rose is 9 and sweet white is 12.

don't forget some pubs offer 35ml measures and I they are 4 syns ?

Thanks. It was 16 months ago, so I'm more at the "getting on with things" stage now, sigh. If the silly sod hadn't wanted to go to the Falklands to see the penguins, his angina might have been spotted. As it was, they'd just sailed out of Brazil, so the medic told him it was swine flu. It wasn't.

Sorry if you think I'm being blase, just thought I'd explain that I'm past the handle with care stage, and apart from putting on 3 stone more which was also due to having no kitchen for 3 months, I reckon I'm coping pretty well.

    If 25ml is 2.5 syns how is a 35ml 4 syns? Surely they're 3.5 syns because it's 10ml per syn (25/2.5)...

My consultant read this out the other week at class. I don't know the author but author, consider yourself duly credited/acknowledged.

This is the story of Mrs Ivy Been so Good.

Ivy was really disappointed this week after having maintained after "such a good week". Her Food Diary was perfect! Ten syns per day…Maximum! But let’s have a closer look...

We start off with Friday (the day after weigh in - which does exist! … unlike the night of group which has become "treat night") Forgetting the big cheese sandwich, the large glass of wine and the piece of cake from the night before, Ivy gets up in fine fettle, really focussed on the week ahead! Let’s see how the day goes…

Ivy has her normal breakfast of Branflakes, milk and banana. She tips them into the bowl… and then thinks "better check the weight of them. I want to get a few pounds off this week!". She puts them on the scales to find there is one 1.5oz… That’s my first healthy B she thinks, taking out the excess and unconsciously popping them in her mouth.

Putting the milk away she spots a carton of Orange Juice open and decides to have a small glass whilst making a boiled egg for her daughters breakfast. When clearing up the dishes, Ivy spies 2 soldiers left on her plate. "I can’t think of the last time I had REAL butter!" she says and in they go!!

After breakfast it’s a trip into town shopping. Armed with a Hifi Bar just in case temptation strikes, they set off.

In Woolworths her daughter gets restless in the buggy and Ivy opens her a packet of crisps to keep her quiet and Ivy ends up tasting a couple ("just checking for freshness!")

Lunchtime comes and the shopping trip is not done yet (there’s still money left on her credit card!!). Ivy decides to grab something from Marks and Spencer’s "I know they do that Count on Us range… it’s bound to be low!" Spoilt for choice, Ivy scans the range. She has already decided to go "original" today and spots a Count on Us Hoisin Duck sandwich. "That would be a great choice … the bread will be my 2nd Healthy B!"
She buys it as a Meal Deal, along with a Diet Coke and a packet of Salt and Vinegar crisps to eat later.

Later on she stops for a coffee at Starbucks. "No cake for me!" she says and savours the Skinny Latte ("I can use that as my 2nd Healthy A!" and it contains no syrup of course!) She’s delighted that she hasn’t needed the "emergency Hifi" whilst out today.

Back at home after shopping, she makes cakes with her daughter. She resists the fairy cakes when they come out of the oven….. but CAN’T resist licking the wooden spoon!!

She feeds the kids early – a chicken nugget and 2 chips remain on the plates…. And they don’t go in the bin!!

Dinner time comes – a nice juicy steak, salad and jacket potato. She weighs her 8 oz jacket potato which is a healthy B choice and puts a spoonful of Quark in it. A tablespoon of Hellman’s Light Mayo goes on the salad … "Only 2.5syns!" she says "That’s my first today!" Hubbie prefers mashed potato with his. She wouldn’t dream of eating it herself…..but does just taste it to see it has the right amount of butter and milk in!

Dessert for Ivy is a Muller light yoghurt. Hubbie has sponge and custard. "It just doesn’t bother me" said Ivy as she’s licking the spoon she used to stir the custard!

By 9.30pm, Ivy felt like a "little something"! Remembering the crisps from the Meal Deal, she checks the syn value and finds they are only 7 syns. "Only 9.5 syns today!" she says "A perfect day!"

OR WAS IT?! How many times have we done this, How many actual syns did she have that day?

The actual amount is 76.5 syns and that’s not even counting the extra 40+syns from the night before!

There are 6 more days to go!!

(Just to put in perspective, those 76.5 syns are the equivalent of an average portion of Chicken Tikka Masala, Pilau rice, 1 naan bread, 2 pints of beer, and 2 small veg samosas!!!. We’d know if we ate that!!!)

The Moral of the story…. Don’t forget all those hidden syns….enjoy!

we all enjoyed the poem and laughed about it but it really hit home to me yesterday just how true this poem is.

so background - I am target member attending a weekly sw class albeit I'm out of target at the moment. At weigh in this week, I put on 1.5 pounds which was very kind of the scales after the rubbish I ate.

Anyway as a long term sw member, I kind of know sw inside out albeit I don't really get the extra easy plan. but since Christmas 2009 and yes I do mean Christmas 2009!!! it isn't a typing error!, I have kind of been kidding myself. I know what to do its just the sticking to it thats the problem. I've been making too many bad choices and enjoying (far) too many syns, I just didn't realise how many !! anyway, enough is enough and I want to turn things around and get back to my target weight. so i bought a page a day diary with the view that I could keep track of my choices, plan meals etc. so yesterday lunchtime I went to the pub and (flat eric whispers) picked the chilli con carne and chips. ??? (its been a long morning and I'm stressed, tired and fed up hence the bad choice) :(So once I've eaten that, I kind of give up for the day.

here is my menu for yesterday

cranberry hi fi bar x 2
28g dorset cereals high fibre muesli HEB
    natural bio yogurt

    clementines (chopped up)
    m&s breadcrumbed chicken piece
    green beans
    birds eye steamfresh veg
    3 spuds
    encona sweet chilli sauce

    1 dark choc digestive
    pack of treat size buttons
    4 milk tray chocs
    very large glass of wine

    4 meringue nests

chilli and chips at pubs (Served with nachos and sour cream)

    side salad
    275ml j20
    3 x salad creams
oh and a pack of minstrels which I forgot about until today !

bit of fun ! how many syns do you think this little lot amounted to ?

it certainly gave me a wake up call !!

ummm can't answer that one ! just checked the sw site to check i'm not going mad and it states for vodka 25ml its 2.5 syns, for 35ml its 4 syns ?

I know that unless its baileys that you are having and other selected spirits that the same syn values apply
