I tried a really nice root-veg gratin at a friends house the other day and I'd like to make it more SW friendly. The recipe got 300ml milk and 250ml cream in it.
Any idea what I can replace it with since the vegetable will boil in the fluid?

Hi greenpixey, could you just use all milk and then HEA your portion depending on how many it feeds. It wouldn't be as rich as using cream but it would be a darn sight more healthier. I think something like yogurt would split in the heat of the oven.

Might try this myself as I love gratin/dauphinois.. its sooo comforting on these cold wet windy nights.

Thanks, all milk is probably the best. I did potato gratin the other day and replaced the fluid with a tin of Asda Smart price Macaroni Cheese that I blitzed and added 4oz water to. It was lush and syn free.
Was contemplating doing it with the root-veg recipe as well but not sure cheese flavour would be the way to go.

Is Asda Smart Price macaroni cheese really syn free?

Hate to rain on your parade, but tinned macaroni cheese is usually reasonably high in syns - and blitzing it up to use as a sauce would count as miss-use of food, because you're more likely to consume more if you treat it as a sauce rather than asa meal in itself, if that makes sense :(

Sorry! :( Just don't want you to cook this regularly without realising how many syns are in it. (Unless I've missed something - in which case budge over world, I'm going to Asda :D)

Thanks lo_bush, I hope so too! I want all of the Christmas stuff to just be eaten now, but OH's on a health kick (unless it involves cutting down on alcohol) so doesn't touch any of it. Might have to force feed him..... lol
