Depends where you are staying but
Maid from $2 per day, more if you have asked for extra items
Waitress anywhere from 10% if OK but not brilliant up to 20% for really good service this is from the PRE-TAX amount (it will be shown on the bill)

10% for waitress will not go down well for OK service.

Also, Ive never really thought about it, but I always tip the bottom line amount, not the pre-tax amount.....am I overtipping?

Also, poker dealers, couple of dollars for a winning hand. Plus blackjack I tip a few dollars on a blackjack.

Probably, but we do the same...suspect a lot of people do. The only time we look a the pre-tax amount is when we used a restaurant.com or other voucher, to get the full price before discount.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

I tip whatever I feel appropriate, didnt leave a tip at the excalibur buffet as had to get own drinks and plates were not cleared away I will never tip for what I consider bad service, but I do mystery shop part time here so am used to seeing lots of varying degrees of service. On other hand left $20 tip at MIX on top of the $30 tip they add to the bill as the service was excellent. Left the maid all our change at end of stay, might not have been a lot but when there is 5000 thousand rooms each leaving a few dollars must add up quickly.

I look at what the tax is and double that to get the tip amount in restaurants. There is also a cool iPhone app (other phones are available)called tip calculator, works very well.
I never tip chamber maids, they are on a good wage (in excess of $12 an hour) unlike valets, waiters, bellboys etc.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

    Good idea Stoneman.

Also, buffets, depending on the cost I will leave a few bucks eg two or three bucks for average service at a two person $15 breakfast buffet - more if they deserve it......but not the whole 15%.

May not have expressed myself very well, by OK I mean they turn up take the order (no real interaction) then you dont see them until they drop the bill on your table as they walk past. its rare but it happened in Applebys this time so she got 10%, not really bothered if she was happy or not LOL. Normally I am always 20% and then rounded up as I tend not to have change in Vegas (just walking past random slot machines takes care of that)

so did we but there was a tipping guide on our table in "B" buffet (M resort) which stated pre tax. It also recomended $2 per person at buffets.

Thanks to Ferf and bubble for the MRB. We have used several of the downtown ones so far. We had dinner at Magnolias in the 4 Queens using a 2for1 yesterday. They do a good prime rib dinner there. I had that and Tony had a roast beef sandwich. Yummy.

Glad you are able to make use of them. Enjoy your stay.....another long one?:)

This is our first trip to US. How much is acceptable to tip e.g maid, waitress, taxi etc?

I tip housekeeping $5 a day for the day staff and then $3 for turndown service (I'm never sure if you're expected to tip for this). However, last trip I tipped more at turndown as I left a note asking for extra chocs which they were then very generous with :)

Restaurants I tip 20% on the pre tax amount. Cabs I give $3 if the fare is less than $15, $4 if it's up to about $21 and then $5 for more. I also give the guy who opens the cab door at the taxi line $1 or if I have luggage and he helps put it all in the cab a couple. I also give $5 when the guy brings the cases to the room.

Eight weeks and one day this time. Six and three remaining.
  • Am I right in thinking that lowcostusa are a fairly popular and above board company?

We're currently looking at hotels for our week long vegas trip in a months time (nothing like leaving the hotel booking to the last minute - we did have a back up in place to avoid panic however) and are finding them to consistantly be a lot cheaper than other sites. In fact when looking at making the week a two hotel stay they're cheaper than the hotel's own prices (lowcostsusa are quoting 3 nights at the Venetian for less than £300 and 4 nights at the Bellagio for just over £400). That just seems too good to be true or is it because its last minute bookings/offer? Are they ok to book with or should I be wary?
