I've only been once but I spent my time playing live poker at the MGM Grand, and a little bit of Blackjack. Never got round to getting a Players Card. Maybe I will this time, although from what I read above it doesn't seem worth it if you play at the tables.

The MGM poker tables have electronic swipes that the dealer runs your card through when you sit down. there is an indicator on the table that replicates seat posistion. You are rated all the time you sit down, I can't remember how much it is, somewhere between $1 and $2 per hour, when you are away from the table the dealer pauses the clock on your seat.

Whilst most rooms will have shills or grinders at the tables, the MGM has more than most, it is not unusual to have 2 or more on a table. Once you identify them they are easier to play against. These players may play 40-50 hours a week, even more if things are good. One I got to know saved his comps to bring his parents out for a week and have a posh meal all on the card.

The MGM tends to have the younger more boisterous player, bad beats abound but you can accumulate chips with a fairly solid strategy, and you don't need to sandbag, just bet your hands for value, someone seems to always want to come along looking for their one outer and you just gotta make them pay to draw, no free cards. You do get drawn out on but it is still +EV.

Indeed. The only things between LA and Vegas are Barstow, Peggy Sues, Primm, and tumbleweed.

Cheers for the advice mate. When I was there last there I was on a real tight budget so was playing at the 50c/$1 cash tables. You'd think it'd be full of fish but on the contrary I think a lot of experienced players play there to try and build up some easy chips from the fish. Ironic!

Pretty much every room will have grinders, you'll also get the locals playing the casinos where they offer various promos, Bills for example has a $1/$2 limit game where in the mornings they have an aces craked promo, if you have aces and they get beat you get $30 or so. You'll get 3 tables full of people just sitting there waiting for aces, it's an absolutely horrible game. On the stroke of midday the place empties and they move on to the next promo.

The only wickedly funny thing is to bet it down to the river and you're sure they've got aces is fold to no bet on the river. It's cruel but class to see them flip.

The only thing with the young crowd at the MGM to watch for is stack sizes when you sit down. You get a lot of min buy-in players, that IIRC is about $40, you sit down with a couple of hundred, you ain't gonna win much and the increased risk is that you'll lose significant amounts from all-in pushes by the skinny players that shut's out other players in the hand and costs you $40 dollars or so. If they double up or more they'll walk.

I will usually buy in at a decent stake if the money is on the table if the number of min buy-in stacks is above 2/3 rds of the players sitting down then I'll get up.

Observe some of the online sites you see it constantly.

    sounds a plan!
Am more of a table player (BJ, 3 card poker and Roulette)... oh well, at least if the waitresses notice me for giving me free drinks (am guessing $3 tip each time would keep her coming back ?), i'd be happy with that.... not sure am gonna catch the attention of a pit boss with my small spending!
If you tip $3 a round I will serve you!! There tends to be better waitress service on the tables than the machines, they assume table players tip more. $1 a drink is fine, even for shorts. And no, you won't catch the pit critters attention. I have given up trying to get comps, you gotta be betting $25 a hand and be sat down for 2-3 hours to get anything. I don't even give them my players card anymore, but then I tend to hit and run. You could try a little game with them that some use: When you see the boss come over to mark what you are playing bet bigger, as soon as he walks away take the money down. When he goes on a break, you go to the bathroom, it's all about spending as long at that table as you can without losing your stack. I still use that trick on the craps tables but it is easier to hang around on them than B/J, and I love the dice setters that take ages, it winds some people up but I just think "go on, waste a little more time"
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

indeed we will - Mrs Fluff is organising the short road trip

so far it looks like Breakfast in LA - then drive to San Dimas purely so I can have my photo taken doing a "Bill and Ted" out side the high school.

Then off to Vegus stopping at:
    - a "old american Dinner" that Mrs Fluff has earmarked
    - the worlds largest themonitor
    - Primm for the outlet stores

Ariving in vegas - I will be playing a Tom Jones CD - fact!

am happy to tip like that, as am guessing if were playing games in the casino for 2 hours, and bought drinks, it would cost alot more than that ? (am assuming you pay at the bar?)....
So if i tipped a waitress $3 each time for 2 drinks, she would pop by every 15 mins hopefully ? :):):)
