It's me again:o Still researching hotels for our 4 days in Vegas at begining of May. Me and my hubby are first timers, not interested in gambling..

Could you please recommend some hotel about 10 min walk to strip where we can get room with coffee maker and fridge for max £50 per night (we are on tight budget)?
    Is there such a place?

I had look at Tripadvisor and found Desert Rose and Staybridge Suites. They are both in our budget with kitchen, microwave and breakfast. swimming pool and still just 10 min walk to strip:j (Staybridge even with balcony)
What do you think? have you stayed in any of those?
We are now deciding between those two suite properties near the strip and Monte Carlo..
    Best wins ever:
2012: Holiday to LA for 2 adults +2 kids for 4 days
    2013: £2 000 Virgin Holiday Voucher!
2014: $1000 spending money for hols
2015: 8 night holiday to Thailand

I guess I fell into the common misconception that star ratings are based on anything other than facilities etc (ie. as opposed to whether every room is spotless, has 2 coats of paint on it or whatever, it's more a case of, "is the reception open more then 18 hours a day"). I suppose that's why most hotels in Vegas are 3 or 4 stars :)

anyways, c'mon Stuie... tell us what the free show tickets are that you got - even i'm getting curious now! :D

Read through the Desert Rose reviews until you get to Oct/Nov last year.

I wouldn't touch them...I wouldn't stay at Staybridge either, but that's just us.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Bit of an exageration -plenty of people go to Vegas without feeling the need to drink or gamble although I do get what you're saying. I've met a few who didn't realize the enforcement of the drinking/gambling laws is entirely different in the US to here.
    Go on, name one!!!;)
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

i probably drink a bit more than i gamble... i think... it's hard to tell - there are occassions where i stop pressing the button for a few seconds, but its very rare i don't have a drink in my hand

...but then at the same time, i'm not drinking it all the time - it's only occasionally cos i have to breathe every now and again

hmmm, it's a toughie for sure!

    See my addition above :)

I know it has a reputation for being not great, but apparently it underwent a renovation recently and it's pretty decent now. Considering our main purpose of visit is drinking and playing poker, we're not after somewhere with tons of facilities. As long as the room is clean, spacious and comfortable (and hopefully a strip view) and there is an ice machine not too far away, then I'll be happy!

Plus it's right next door to MGM Grand which has a great poker room :D

Wow this advice is amazing, thanks! I don't know anyone who has been before so all this is invaluable to me.

I'm either playing the 1500 HORSE and the 1000 NLH, or just the 2500 8-game. I've yet to decide, although the former = playing 2 events = reduced variance, so I'm more tempted by that for that reason; on the flip side of the coin (a flip I never win) it's been very profitable playing 8-game, enough to pay for this trip, and only playing one event would mean more time with my fiance.

What are the rooms in the Rio like? The reason I wanted a suite in the venetian is if I was playing all day and my girlfriend got bored, she could go and chill in a large space; would the Rio suffice for this?

As this is my first time in Vegas, would you propose playing 2 games for 6 of 8 days, or playing one game for 3 of 8 days and being a tourist for the remainder? This is a once in a lifetime poker holiday for me, but I'm going in blind not knowing anyone who's played in the wsop.

Any and all advice is gratefully received. Have you been before, Spursman & Duchy? What did you play, how intimidating was it on your first trip?
Aah a proper poker player, I much prefer having more than 2 cards in my hand, I don't really get a lot of the 2 card bingo mentality that prevails. In mixed games you will need to practice limit, it is very rare to find a pot limit game especially Omaha and the like.

The IP has a very acceptable mixed game on a Sunday evening on a $3/$6 bilnds limit. With some very interesting varieties.

It will be a blast, but it will be hard work, you're absolutely right about making something special as a fall back for the fiance. It is a bit sad when you see the OH of player sitting for the duration next to them, it's even worse when someone at the table objects and she has to stand behind the rail. The last thing you need on your mind will be her as sweet and loving as she is, is the hanging around that she will be doing, she may well support or tolerate you persuing your dream, but she will want some payback.

You will find that a few ar******s apart most of the Brits out there are very friendly, most are stag and gambling is their whole focus of being there. There are a fair few with wives and girlfriends who seem to round up others in similar circumstances and sort their own programme of entertainment, a sort of loose ladies thing go off and do lunch hit one of the malls, do an afternoon show etc, you'll pay of course and if she gets in the groove it'll be quite handsomely expensive as well.

You're going on your own so you may be able to team up beforehand, there are a number of poker forums 2+2 being one of them and there are bound to be strings talking about it.

The HORSE events are a bit special, one of the boys plays a few of the cheaper ones every year, I've got a piccy of him sitting between Greg Raymer and Chris Ferguson, nice pic but not the posistion you want to be in if you intend to win money.

You'll also find that the Golden Nugget and Binions do tourneys at the same time that shadow the wsop schedule and for smaller buy-ins.

I know a few of the boys are heading out but they tend to go stag, but if there looks like a bit of a hen thing developing then I'll flip you a note.

    Hi everyone.
Been to Vegas before and heading out for our 7th trip this year.
We usually play at MGM casinos and after reading a thread on here the other night decided to log into my players club account.
Im being offered comped rooms at NYNY and Mandalay Bay and these have to be use before July.
Im not out there until September for a wedding and wondered if anyone knows whether other offers/comps will become available throughout the year?

Im suprised how good the casino rates are for rooms too, i just cant beleive ive never bothered to look before weve been before.
