Well today i have started the declutter, my dd has just dropped off 5 single duvet covers that we no longer use to the cs.
Some of the books cluttering my kitchen i will take to work tomorrow, as we have a bookcase where we can leave unwantd books for others to take and read.
Feels really good to have made the start :j

I've been a regular on the great declutter threads on and off and it's great to see all the new enthusiastic people for the new year.

Here are a few bits that have helped me on my way (although my house is far from perfect!):

One thing some people do to help is post in as well as out. All very well decluttering 100 items if another 100 make their way in whilst you're doing it and I've found this helps me think when I buy things other than food etc which will leave the house quickly - do I really want this sitting around in my house?!

phizzimum's post about a friend coming round and giving her back something she'd lent her reminded me that's another key thing - check books, cds, dvds, knitting patterns, etc etc for things you've been lent and could give back.

If you're selling things on ebay and don't have debts that you need to put the money towards save the money to buy a nice piece of furniture to help hold clutter - just after we finished uni we did a car boot sale and use the money to buy bed side tables we needed but didn't have much money for - still going strong today.

We have 2 bins in each room - a white one for waste (rubbish that goes in black bin) and red for recycling - so that if we finish a magazine in the living room it can go straight in the red bin in the living room, finish a bottle of shampoo in the en suite, put it in the red bin in the bedroom - means you don't have piles of recycling sitting around, we live in a 3 storey house so particularly an issue for us - easier to wait until you fill a bin/the recycling needs to go out and take one pile down than try and carry individual items downstairs and find a home for them there.

I'm starting my 2011 decluttering challenge by doing our accounts and shredding receipts/recycling envelopes etc - getting the there slowly.

Good luck everyone - 2011 will be the year of the tidy home!

Yorkielass - that's a fab idea about buying storage furniture with Ebay money... sadly I've spent all mine in the sales. Waiting for a free listing day, so I can start again!

I'm having a go at decluttering 100 things in 10 days, starting today.

    In

Digital camera (bought with xmas money)

    Out

    1. Pen binned as had run out and not refillable
    2. 2010 calendar recycled
    3. Christmas cards recycled
    4. Eight Christmas decorations into charity bag
    5. Chipped mug thrown away
    6. Mini rucksack into charity bag
    7. Book into charity bag
  • Not done that much in the last 2 days but have listed 2 items on ebay and 3 books on greenmetropolis.

Pleased to say that, apart from food shopping, nothing else has come into this house:jand a few out of date things have been binned from the 2 remaining food cupboards - which are now all sorted and tidy.

Right , Spent 2 hours in the bedroom rooting through the underbed boxes , ended up with another bag for the CS . A box of magazines for recycling , these need to go to the tip as my bin is full and 2 bags of rubbish . Next pase is to declutter the wardrobe , but that will have to wait till tomorrow as im knackered and baby is doing somersaults , as it was all night preventing me from sleeping. Been told to sit down by DH by FB anyway , so will do as Im told.

    :) Happy decluttering.
Yes definitely sit down! Baby must be wondering what's going on :A Have you got someone who could help you with wardrobe sort out - a sis or friend? You could sit down and they could do all the heavy work.

Keep up the good work everyone, feels good doesn't it? I'll be back with an update on my declutter projects (as per sig) later. :)

    Oooo yes piccies.

I did start taking photos of my lovely clean kitchen (but cluttered cupboards) he other day but the batteries ran out.

I plan to take before and after pics to 'shame' myself into keeping things tidy if nothing else.

Go on who's going to be the bravest and post pictures first? :rotfl:

Brave thing you! Looks just like my place :) So where are you attacking first? So then you can post a lovely after shot - but no cheating by moving stuff into another room (tut tut at me even suggesting some of us might do that.....)

PS: You have a lovely house there - I can see posh doors, lots of rooms and a peek of a nice garden.
PPS: I have a lovely house too - so why is it full of "stuff" so it cannot be enjoyed :(
