love this thread. i started decluttering just before xmas when we got a new bedroom carpet. had to empty wardrobes. hubby put all his clothes in the loft and the lazy thing has only brought a few of his clothes back down to put in the wardrobes (having said that i had put a load of his clothes in a big box 3 years ago that i wanted him to sort and they remain unsorted). i have also started to declutter the loft of 1000's of videos and loads of soft toys are going to charity shops or for raffles at work. loads of stuff you put in the loft for years and then after years have passed throw away. i am not putting anything else in the loft that i will probably look at in 10 years time and throw away.
i think i have all birthday cards my DD has had for each of her 15 birthdays and am thinking of throwing them all away with this years xmas cards, well recycle.
i have also decided that any xmas decs in the loft i did not use this year are gonna be thrown away.Just about to give up!0 -
Hi, I don't think I posted on the last thread but I think I'll join in with this one.
Our place isn't bad at all really, but I do have rather alot of books which are on bookcases, but its getting to the point that I'm putting books across the top of the one which stand up. Abit of a slippery slope there.
I used to collect Agatha Christie book and being as there are alot of them around in Charity Shops etc it was rather easy to collect, and being as she wrote about 80 stories well you get the idea.
They are nice to have, but I don't re-read them and I only pick them up to dust them
So I've put 4 on eBay today, see how that goes.
The one good thing is I very rarly buy any books now so at least they will deminish if I sell them. :T
I got a kindle for xmas. I'll be able to put 3,500 books on it, with no clutter!!! I sorted out my bookshelves over xmas, and took a big bag of books to the charity shop. A good start I think!0 -
I'm a forum novice and this is my first post. My aim is to overhaul my life and make the most of it. I downsized radically a couple of years ago and thought that this would keep my cluttering at bay but I have been unstoppable. Over Christmas I was looking at my carpet and came to the conclusion that it could do with a good clean but there is so much junk around the place that it would make it difficult to do. So one of my objectives is to get the place tidy enough to clean the carpet. It would make me feel a lot better. But first things first I need to wash up before I go to bed. After that I'm not sure where to start. But that will have to be tomorrow.
I'd appreciate any help people can give especially from people who live in very small homes. I have one room, a small bathroom and a tiny kitchen. I would like to like live simply, tidily and have a Good Life
Wishing you all a happy New Year:AWonderfulLife:A0 -

Well at least it appears to be organised clutter with lots of gaps. Now in my house it's a whole different story. The problem I have is if I clear a space along comes someone who sees said space and immediately drops something on/in it. I sometimes feel like King Canute trying to hold back the tide!!!!0 -

I know exactly how you feel! My living room carpet really needs a good hoover right now but there so many bits off clutter about there really is very little exposed carpet to hoover. But I'm making progress so hopefully can get it done in a few days.
I live in a extremely small 2 up 2 down and although ot sounds really obvious the best thing I can recommend is making as much use out every bit of space you have as possible.. We are really short of storage space as living room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom are all really small and we have no attic so I really have to maximise the potential out of every nook and cranny. Here are a few things we have done recently to make the most out of the space we have
We have put 2 shelves up in our cuboard under the stairs (it's too small to walk into like alot of cuboards under stairs) which has allowed us to keep more things in there, and also keep it tidyer. It used to be a bit of a no-go area but now the cats litter tray, cat litter bag and cat food bags are kept on the bottom shelf, one of the shelves is used for tools and paintbrushes and the other shelf is currently storing a bulk supply of toilet rolls and mini hoover.
I'm waiting for OH to put up a couple of shelves in the cupboard under the boiler in the bathroom as I can use it for keeping towels and bedding. It's a decent size cupboard but can't really use it at the moment as I don't want to put towels and bedding on the floor in it so they are currently heaped up on a basket oustide the cupboard - which makes getting in and out the bathroom slightly more difficult as it's right be the door!
We have a small shelf above the door in the kitchen which is handy as it doesn't really invade on the rooms space but it is somewhere I can put the things I buy in bulk from whole food company until I need to use them.
Try having a look around your house for the things that are taking up space, then consider if you really need to keep them. If you do need to keep them, do they have to be kept where they are or can they be tucked away in the attic/under the stairs/on top of wardrobes. If they are things you use regularly is there a space saving way you could store them? My OH has a huuuuge dvd collection, most of which is currently stored on a largeish bookcase in the living room, he wont even consider parting with them but I think they are eating in to valuable living room space so we are building large corner shelves to go above the TV to house them. The way I see it is above there is alot of wasted space so we might aswell use it for something. Although I am a bit worried once the shelves are up it might make the room look a bit smaller. I have a fair few CDs, which I never really play these days as I just connect Ipod into the car radio but I don't want to get rid of them so as soon as I finish uploading them they will be put in boxes on top of the wardrobe.
Will try and think of a few more tips for small housesThey are such a nightmare to keep tidy when there is hardly any room to put anything!

Some toiletre's used up and the packaging reycled scary to think that I'v got a bin liner of plastic also some magazin's in the blue box, glad it's being emptyed thursday,it's full.
The amount of packaging things are in is disgusting :mad:A bit morbid maybe, but it's so that if anyone dies between one Christmas and the next, the one I've kept from the previous year would be the last one I ever got from that person, and I would then keep it permanently, I'm really glad I kept the last one from my mum.
I can kind of see what you mean. I am a 'flinger' when it comes to greetings cards though. After seeing my MIL's cupboard, containing every card anyone has ever sent her:eek::eek:
:j everyone is doing well. I'm off to Lidl to do some shopping now so stuff will be coming in, but will be eaten :rotfl:
Bat - those photos are amazing - I would love to come round and help you. Good luck!Enjoying the power and freedom of letting things go.
