  • After simply requesting my bank statements they closed my current account without notice and charged me £48.00. I complained and demanded compensation and they have re-instated my account and paid me £150.00 and 'sincerely apologised'. Still going after the rest they owe me though!!:j

    I have 2 questions and I wonder if anyone can help me. I am considering reclaiming from Barclays for my student acount charges they kept putting upon me, however I have an overdraft with them and cant afford to lose it. What is barclays reputation with regards to closing accounts?

    Second question, can we reclaim against credit cards that charged us, even if we have closed the account. If you can, how would one go about it?
    Thanks :rotfl:

    If they close your account you can get arround £200 compensation! ;) find my previous posting (click my name) for more details :)

    AND YES! You can claim any charges from the past 6 years on bank accounts and credit cards (again see my previous postings, including success's which so far have only been against credit cards ;)) EVEN on closed accounts!

    IKEA CARD = £120 charges = £175 received (146%)
    MARBLES = £450 charges = £370 received (82%)

    CAPITAL ONE = £981 charges = £1,489.03 (152%)
    BARCLAYCARD = £580 charges = £786.12 (136%)
    On Hold :mad:

    From my days the other side of the counter from the public the right to set -off a credit balance against a debit one was well known. I cannot access Hsbc's but it is included in another large bank's, and I certainly do not believe that on such matters HSBC would have inderior rights. I conclude that the bank is right in its stance. However there is no excuse for rudeness to anyone, whatever their status is. It's totally unprofessional.
    do you know if you can attempt to reclaim bank charges if the bank has already closed your account before yostarted proceedings? Please advise at your earliest convenience. Thanks.

    I havent even completed my claim yet and i got a letter this morning telling me my account has been closed. Ok i am £49 od but through no fault of my own, i lost me job 2 months ago and have had no money at all, they say in their letter that "due to the continued overdrawn position on my account we have today cancelled any facilities you held" This is Barclays btw. I only received my offer for settlement from them the other day, they havent even given me time to tell them to stick the £200 out of £1800 they owe me up their harris. Fast workers arnt they.

    Are they actually allowed to shut me down like this? ithing is i do hold 2 accounts with them but they seem to have only noticed the one lol.

    has anyone complained to the financial services ombudsman about bank accounts being closed?
  • So basically you WANT the bank to close your account without telling you really as it amounts to decent amount of money thanks to the ombudsman! Only joking. I applied for my 6 years statements, sent the letter on Tuesday I think it was. Also have a bit of information regarding anyone who bacnk with Abbey. Spoke to a really helpful advisor in a CC in Bradford and was talking to her about all this re-claiming charges. She pretty much said "well why don't you try and claim them back? We very rarely take people to court"

    But after reading back through this thread I see accounts have been closed so unsure but I will fight the good fight. How many people who have asked for their statements through Abbey have received them within the 40 days? I anticipate having to ring the ombudsman as when I rung them Monday they had a guy issuing the automated statement "anyone asking for their last 6 years statement please bear in mind that it could take longer than 40 days due to the vast number of requests we are receiving" Or something along those lines. Interesting.

    Hi I am very concerned that Abbey will close my bank account if I file for charges to be refunded. I reccon they re due me about £2000 in charges back.

    I would go overdrawn then they would charge me, I would lose track of what was taken off my account as I was using my VPcard to pay for purchases, and they would charge me if i had not left enough money in my account for direct debits, even if I paid the money in the day after.

    I had an overdraft of £1000 which I used every month. I have since then agreed to pay my overdraft back of 4 months and have kept to the agreement and now my account has not been overdrawn by 1p since.

    Do you think this would be the best time to start the ball rolling?

    Because I had a few problems I think my credit score is not good, and it seems that this is affecting me opening up a new account, which I don't want any overdrafts on but just to have my wages paid into.

    Really don't know what to do, but I feel that abbey has ripped me off, time and time again.

    Where do I start and has anyone has a similar experience that could tell me what happend with them.

    Been thinking about it for a while.

    I have my mortgage with abbey and not missed a single payment in 7 years, also have the mortage insurance out with them to, and an ISA account, but it only has 79p in it.

    Please help, Im not sure if I am opening up a can of worms, and if they close my account what will I do with my wages.....

    Help and advice please wanted....

    So it seems that £200 is about the norm then for offering as compensation. The financial Ombudsman have just written to me saying that Alliance and Leicester have offered this as a full and final settlement to my complaint (they've already had to pay me £600 for my claim). I just wanted to get an idea about this amount before i go ahead an accept. I probably will anyway as it really didnt causeme any bother when they did close the account as id already set up another, but it was the principal.

    Has anyone stuck out for any more??

    I'm just right at the beginning of claiming charges back (ie asking for statements). Halifax could not guarantee that I would not be asked to leave their bank if I persued a claim against them for bank charges. I have no overdraft with them anyway and do not owe them anything. I do have £10k in one of their saving accounts though!
    Doing the same with Egg (just asked for my statements today) which they said I could have for free. I don't owe them anything either as I paid off my card a month or so ago. Funny how they closed my account today though after weeks of me asking them to! ;)
