  • After a question asked by user MarkKellie about which banks close your account after you have made a claim for the return of unfair bank charges I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for users to report if this has happened to them and which bank it is.

    All that is required is to say which bank it is along with what accounts they closed as another concern users have is if their loan account will be closed or even their mortgage account.

    Please don't ask questions on this thread but post them here and your Success Story please post here :)

    Hi there,

    I claimed a total of £2333 (including interest) from Nationwide and a month later they closed my account with no warning or :eek: ...It caused me no end of hastle and stress. However I am claiming that this also is unlawfull and have made a claim with the financial ombudsman. I am hoping he will get me the £300 compensation for Nationwide's unlawfull behaviour. Fingers crossed for me...I will let you all know!!

    Hi,
    Ive just written about this but I'm not sure if you will be able to see it or not. I ggot £2333 from Nationwide in november (15th) then in dec(15th ) they closed my account with no warning. in a nut shell I think that is also illegal so I have got a form from the financial ombudsman asking fior help. They wrote to Nationwide saying they have till 15th May (other day) to reply...as predicted they have not bothered. They have had 8 weeks now so I have sent the other filled in forms to the financial ombudsman saying ive been given the runaround so hopefully they will help me get the £300 I am after...Do it...it will show them we aren't to be messed with..

  • Hi all last week i spoke to a young lady from the nat west whilst she was outside having a crafty smoke i asked her if they were having to close a lot of accounts she said that her branch has not closed a single account or were theye going to, she did say that some branches would but not very many
    mabey this is being left till later to see if they have any customers left when the dust has settled as im claiming £11600 inc interest i dont really care what they do cash under the mattress is the only way forward

    But surely the whole point of this excercise is that the charges they are charging are too high?? If the banks/BS haven't learnt that lesson after having to repay charges then thats their problem surely?

    All they need to do is reduce charges to be realistic and fair!

    If it was me then i would proceed with reclaiming further charges..and if the account is closed then make a complaint about them closing the account!

    banks and BS get their pound of flesh from their customers all the time..they would do best to take heed form all the money they are paying out and start to charge less to avoid any more claims.

    Yes, you are right.

    It's nice to see the banks paying back, as they treat people with low income or no savings very badly. All their retoric about 'contact us, and we will help', is nonsene. They won't, and if they do, it's only try and push you further into debt. They are, in fact, bullies.

    But too many people are getting their money back, blowing it on whatever, and then going overdrawn again and complaining. One poster said he/she was a decared bankrupt, who has spent his refunded charges, and was angry that they were now charging him again. When will this individual ever take any responsibility for his/her actions, if people just say go for it again.

    A friend of mine, up to his eyeballs in debt, is claiming his charges back with my help. The other day, he wanted me to lend him the money he is expecting back, to buy a £1500 TV. Ridiculous.

    Martin himself, says that the best way to stop these charges, is to not go everdrawn.

    But many of us have gone overdrawn ,repeatedly, and are now reclaiming the charges back. But i for one appreciate the money i have got back, and see it as a fresh start, and i intend to try and keep withing my limit. I may fail, i may succeed, but i will try.

    Many on here seem to think it's perfectly fine to do it all over again, and it isn't.

    I had 3 bank accounts all with direct debits on them (silly really) and they all over time incurred charges. I claimed all my charges back on the 3 accounts.
    Since then i have closed 2 accounts and with my refunded charges i paid it into the remaining account. It's a safe-guard really as i don't want more charges. I am now very carefull and tried to get all my direct debits taken out the same date each month. I keep a very close eye on my account.
    I wouldn't dream of blowing the money then finding myself in the same position all over again! I certainly wouldn't have the guts to re-claim.:rolleyes:

    Hiya yes i agree with you.. i dont suppose any of us want to be in this position out of choice..i know i dont!

    The problem is sometimes there are unforseen circumstances which leave you in the sitiuation where you have a DD returned because it made you go O/D by a few pounds and then you get charged which then has a knock on effect if you dont address it immediately and then sometimes you arent able to do that..I wouln't 'deliberately' get myself over my O/D thinking 'oh its ok i'll just claim it back again' (i'm not implying that you are suggesting that either!) because it is a hassle and i dont want there to be any more blemishes on my credit rating..but i'll be honest and i have missed a couple of DD's since i've started may claim to my bank and i do feel a bit of an idiot but my financial cricumstances have changed in the last few months which were beyond my control. Having said that, i'm very anxious now about going down the reclaiming road again with the same bank (still in process of reclaiming charges)but i see no other option.

    hopefully if and when i do get back my charges with my bank it will put me in a better financial position and there will be no reason for me to go over my O/D again. In fact it will clear my O/D so fingers crossed.

I am sure there will be no tears shed at the bank when you pay off your overdraft and close the account, saves them the bother of closing your account as you obviously have no intention of keeping within the T&Cs you agreed to.

    Following your advice I opened a parachute account with the Halifax, but Barclays reduced my Barclaycard credit by £5000 instead.

    Shaz, you are spot on. Most of us on here probably started out with just one or two missed DD's. Then, thanks to the banks charges, these spiraled out of control.

    You say you have incurred more charges since you started your claim. Well thats to be expected, and probably true of many on here. If you havent got the money, then theres not much you can do, until you get your money back.

    All i am saying, is that if someone does get their money back, then blowing it all and then going straight overdrawn again, is not a wise move.

    This could be the fresh start that many of us have dreamed of, and i for one, intend to take it. Of course, some people's payouts may not be that much, but quite a lot are life changing amounts, and should be handled with care.;)

    If i'm successful with my claims i should have a clean slate overdraft wise and am getting rid of all my C/Cards..god i wish i never got any! but hindsight is a great thing!
