But surely the whole point of this excercise is that the charges they are charging are too high?? If the banks/BS haven't learnt that lesson after having to repay charges then thats their problem surely?

They will not admit the charges are fair or unlawful though as that would mean paying billions to everyone. At present they still make far more profit on charges than they are losing on the ones they have to pay back.

Probably only 10% of people are actually pursuing them at the moment.

    Hi Techspec,
I contacted the office that sent me the quoted letter, mainly to discuss the charges that had just been put on my account: During a lengthy conversation, the woman said that they would not be refunding any more charges - that if I tried to claim through the Courts, [she] would have no choice but to see me as a "customer who doesn't want to bank with them" and that I would be given 30 days notice of account closure. I informed them that, if they did, I would take the matter further. I work within the Criminal Justice System and I'm used to dealing with difficult people, but I really could barely contain my anger during the call. She was impolite and terse to the point of rudeness...I was made to feel as if I was stealing from her, instead of claiming what was taken from me illegally.
The customer service at Nationwide really has gone downhill. Banks in this country have way too much power and they really don't deserve to have the profit from our money.

    Hi,
    I recently had a conversation with a lovely lady from A&L :
I had a letter saying they were closing my account due to the fact that I did not agree with the T & C as I had complained about my bank charges ( a very small amount).
We talked about the customers right to complain and she said that if I agreed to the T and C I could appeal to keep the account open.
I refused on principle as I will not compromise my beliefs that the charges are excessive, and will not be dictated to as to what I can make a complaint about.
She extended the closing date of the account and said if I changed my mind I could appeal and keep the account open! (NO CHANCE)
After a lengthy conversation, she agreed with everything I said and admitted that A&L had lost a lot of good customers!
I then contacted FO who said that I had a case for compensation and they would look into the claim for me!
I shall let everyone know the outcome.

I, agree, the banks need knocking down a peg or too. I think the regulators of many industries, but especially banks, have gone soft over the last few years.

I won my case on the 25th of April, and still don't have my money. They have no respect for me, and certainly none for the law!!

I'm lucky, in that a got a new account with another bank, and was given a huge overdraft, so things have gone well. But some people cannot move that easy, due to the charges causing problems with credit ratings, and they should not have to suffer this intimidation by the banking bullies.

Its not even as if we have a choice abount whether to use a bank or not. In todays society, with everything being paid electronically, its almost impossible to go without one.

Who the hell immediately spends their reclaimed bank charges? It is unbelievable that people are claiming compensation for unlawful charges, spending the money and then moaning about further charges for going overdrawn etc. When are people going to become responsible with their finances? You cannot blame the banks for irresponsible spending.

There has never been an argument that there are penalty charges, just how much they are. People who bounce cheques, direct debits etc should be charged, the point is the law says that the charge should be equal to what it costs the bank to process that charge.

And as my Gran always said "there's nowt so queer as folk"!

The other thing is, if you've been in debt and been skint for so long it's only human to want to be able to treat yourself for once. Life isn't just about getting to your pension, it's about having some pleasure on the way.

    Please do.

I remember reading on one of the threads a while ago that people were complaining to the ombudsman and being awarded compensation by the banks for closing their accounts. :rotfl:
  • Has anyone had their bank account closed after accepting an initial partial offer?

I've written and asked for £840 and been offered £630 as a goodwill offer. I'm happy with that, but if they're (barclays) likely to close my account, I'll push for it all plus interest.

    Any advice gratefull received!

    Thanks!
If you think you can't or you think you can, either way you are right :D
