  • has anyone had their accounts closed after making the request for their statements ?

if they close the account how long do they give you to settle up ?

I'm with barclays and am going to be able to pay off overdrafts by March 31st,but want to get the process started ASAP.
  • I just received the letter from Nationwide telling they are closing my account in 30 days. Fortunatley the amount they have given me so far has covered my over draft, they have just entered a defence and I am waiting for the court papers to come through. They are closing all three of my accounts which is no problem because I have just moved all my banking to Halifax.

I'm following this with interest (no pun intended) as I have an over-the-top charge for a returned S/O with Nationwide, but I'm not willing (yet) to risk having my account closed.

I wonder if they are taking this hard line as they are still a building society and would be committed to giving shares for all older accounts if they ever merge? It seems from this thread that they are the worst culprits.

    What do others think?

Ok we have our joint flexaccount with the Nationwide and were thinking of reclaiming charges going back 6 years. Luckily we don't have to go open another "parachute" account because we have a Halifax current account which we use now and then and so we could transfer our dd's etc over there if we had to. Would be a shame though cos the flexaccount is an excellent account especially abroad.

However I've noticed from reading the various posts that some people who have been told their accounts are being closed have had difficulty opening a parachute account. I just want to find out if this is as a result of any current financial difficulties or is it because the closure of their account by the bank/building society has affected their credit rating.

The problem is that to open a bank account today is much harder thean it used to be. A bank is very unlikely to close your account as you can put forward a case that they closed your account in retaliation for you reclaiming your charges.
the way forward is the consumer action group .co.uk
  • Egg are threatening to close my creditcard account if I claim charges back

In the only case I know of to go to the Financial Ombudsman regarding account closures, the customer was compensated but the account was not reopened. I would be careful about relying on the compaints procedure to try and stop your account being closed.
  • I have been reading around and it looks like if a bank or credit card close your account they cannot demand the whole outstanding balance if you are paying them some money back towards it each month - is that correct?

Or can they put something horrid on your creditfile if you do this?

But I do not think that would necessarily apply if there was previous evidence of bad customer behaviour, such as bounced cheques and DDs or correspondence asking for account to be brought in to order. If it did, it would be tantamount to permtting a rogues' charter:rolleyes:
