  • Thanks Walkon. That is my plan to go and try out the Capri at Dreams but I wasn't sure if it is the same mattress as the price difference is huge. And just wondered if anyone else had one that they liked or disliked as I found with our last bed purchase that they don't feel as good at home night after night as they do when you try them at the shop.

Does anyone on here have a romantica mattress and what are they like? Good or bad?

Hi Walkon I finally brought the La Romantica Madrid, having spoken to Tim at Bed1um Beds, and advising I was looking for a firm but comfortable mattress. I didn't want to post too much (but I have) until I had given it the advised two weeks, but here goes.

So the day before arrival I started preparing for my mattress. Took the mattress protector off as the zip had gone awry. That night mini me who has not wet the bed in 2.5 years decided that the time had arrived. Featherbed which has spent two incident free years in the mattress protector was wet. Not amused!

So I tootled off to John Lewis to buy a replacement all enclosure mattress protector. The one I wanted stated it would fit a depth up to 23cm approximately ie 9 inches.. Spent a horrible amount of time with the sales assistant who was adamant it would not fit a 10 or is it 11inch mattress? I left with king and superking.

Mattress arrived 15 minutes after advised ETA and, as many buyers have stated before me, Tim runs a very efficient service. Customer service AA*.

    1. The mattress is heavy duty. However, I wasn't too impressed with the finishing. The join was noticeably frayed on the edges, I gave it a tug and decided it may go the way of certain buttons when you start pulling loose threads so I stopped, there were plenty of loose strands also. Given that I was using a mattress protector I decided out of sight out of mind. Hope that turns out to be true.

    2. I measured the depth of the mattress (to each furthest point) and it was 9.5 inches. Got many opinions on this and decided to use the king size protector. It was fine. Must remember to return the SK. Just in case you are wondering, if I didn't have the mattress protector there is no way I would have measured it, no reason to really. The valance sheet is behaving like a pair of three quarter length flares! My last mattress was a squidgy 8inches.

    3. I didn't buy the climasmart/coolmax as I couldn't decide whether foam was hot or not. Also I use a 15 tog duvet throughout the year. Given the problems with bed wetting was a duvet down so just used a satin throw which was adequate and I may stick with that going forward. That first night I was hot (sweating slightly), but then I was slightly damp the night before (actually that was Bedgate!) I am prone to nightmares so was unsure. Have had another warmish night but nowhere near the first. Didn't sleep well mainly because on the first night I was trying to analyse whether I was comfortable.

I do have a very major concern which I am Googling and that is headaches which I think may be linked to the smell from the mattress. The smell of the mattress does not overwhelm the room, but it is overwhelming when you lie on it. I recall reading that there are chemicals in the foam. The morning after sleeping on the mattress I woke up with a non stop headache which is quite worrying. Normally I can shake a headache off within 24 hours. I'm not allowing youngster to lie in bed overnight (worried about the headaches) and thankfully Bedgate has given a viable reason for enforcement.

Today (Saturday) lappie still on and hadn't pressed submit so quick update. Still have headache, had the window open last night. Also had the most uncomfortable night's sleep ever. Back is VERY sore and both hips are really painful. The foam doesn't bounce back (i knew it wouldn't but I think that may be causing the problem). Had a coldish night and will revert back to duvet (window perhaps?). My decrepid Silentnight is feeling very attractive.

The mattress definitely does not have the 'yessss' factor for comfortability yet. I am very mindful of the comments previously (pain and then gain) so I am telling myself two weeks, two weeks... and hoping it improves.

I can see why pillowtops etc would be very tempting as they give instant gratification. Thank goodness for the info on this site, as I tell you I would have sent the bed back the night after receipt! Two weeks...:)

LOL dark glasses I got the same bed and your review brings back painful memories.

My bed had a slight chemical like smell as well, not noticable at first but a kind of slow build up which is more noticable when you wake in the morning. If you stand it on end to let both ends air with the windows open it should air quicker. The benefit of this is that once you dress the bed and sleep in it that night there will be no smell, nor the next morning but look out for it the next night as I said I found with me it was a slow build up. From what I've been told though it should really be gone in a few days.

As for the sore back ditto!. To be fair my old mattress was a 5 year old Sealy which didn't last as long as it should have and wasn't supportive while this bed is very firm! Also I dunno about you but I find in the morning my @ss has sunk into the foam so you have a scenario where the top half of your back is lying on the mattress, the middle part and lower part of your back is kinda sinking more into the foam with most 'sinkage'(for want of a better word) is at the bu m area. So you find that every single part of you back is touching the mattress.

Like you say every night you go to bed you are analysing the feel ect but let yourself go to bed for a few night not thinking about it at all and see what you think.

Just to add my sore back is gone although I do sometimes get a twinge in my lower back in the morning but is gone within a few mins of getting up. Also in my old bed I used to wake 3 or 4 times a night but in the new on I sleep right through.

Let us know how you get on.

ps again - I felt it was a little hotter aas well and ended up going from a 10.5 tog to a 7.5 tog duvet.

I got my la romantica in March or April last year. The smell definitely went within a couple of days, and also after maybe a week it felt so comfortable to lie on. Mind you, I went for the Venice as I didn't want one that was too firm.
I have to say, the only problem is that yesterday one of the 'buttons' popped off on one side, and I had to take off the corresponding one on the other side as it was very loose. I don't think this will affect the integrity of the mattress, well, I hope not!!! If anyone knows how I would get it back on, and if that is necessary, then I'd be happy to hear.
I really, truly hope that this bed lasts for a loooong time. I did so much research, agonised over it, and then had to persuade dh that it was the right one to shell out his hard-earned on! It'll be my neck on the line if it's dead in a few years.
Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

  • Thanks Rdel/Rosie383. I have to admit Rdel i am sure it was your review that finally sold the Madrid, so I blame you :p. Actually it just meant that I was going into my purchase with my eyes wide open.

I hope the smell goes as it's not great. Rdel there are so many indents going on with the foam, I am struggling to understand! This has opened a whole different level of learning. What I do know is that from my knee downwards appears to be at a higher level than the rest of my sinking upper half. When I turn I inadvertently 'run away' from the temporary dent seeking flatter ground.

I hear you about your Sealy. My Silentnight was probably separate at birth from your Sealy. The Madrid is very firm though, I hope it softens a bit.

Have just stripped the mattress and airing out, thanks for the advice, that was a workout in itself! The mattress is a weighty beast! Hoping for a headache free day tomorrow.

Funny thing I was tidying up my eBay account last week and saw that I had added Bed1um as a favourite 1 year ago!!! It's good to know that there are many fellow bed/mattress agonisers out there, I thought I was alone.

If it's about the same as the Capri, then why not pop into your local dreams store and try it out.

You don't have to buy from expensive dreams though. Just remember that, rest assured is part of the silent night group. http://www.silentnightgroup.co.uk/

Just remember that it is the same company as the Sealy that you sent back.

I know lol. If I had gone for the pocket spring version, I may have had better luck. It were that posturetech system that was the problem.

Honesty Dark Glasses forget about the smell as an issue. Defo air it with the windows open so when you go to bed at night you can't smell it and it shouldn't be strong, if at all, in the morning. Do this for the next 2 or 3 days and then make the bed on the 3rd or 4th day, there should be no smell that night or morning and the test will be the following day and night if any smell appears.

The reason I'm saying not to worry is because I bought my bed from the same place as you and if after a week there is still a smell or you are concerned about it just contact the seller and they look after you. I know because the service I got was great.

Just concentrate on wether you like the feel of the bed or not and base any decision you make on that.

If by indents you mean the tufts I wouldn't worry about it. I can still remember when I first bought my sealy 5 years ago thinking the same thing that if felt like there was lots of small dips all over the bed but it's only because it's new and you're concentrating on it so much. Bet your old mattress had the same tufts and you've just not noticed recently because it was worn.

Just my thoughts on it :)

Thanks for your detailed response dark glasses. Thats not so good with the stitching. You would of thought they would put a bit more effort it to that. Thats not good either if you are getting back problems but please let us know in two weeks if you still have the same problems.

I am about 50/50 at the moment with la romantica but not to confident with what I have read. Thanks to the others for posting reviews to. I may go for that mattress in allied carpets, that were ok to. And no, it's not a sealy.
I hear you about your Sealy. My Silentnight was probably separate at birth from your Sealy. The Madrid is very firm though, I hope it softens a bit.

Yes it was not as comfortable as i hoped. Lower back problems and basically could feel the springs in my back. Dips to. Back with my memory/reflex foam mattress while I decide what to buy but am in no rush. May take a few months while I way up the good and bad about la romantica and others.

Btw I found two reviews about tim's shop here.
    http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews253385.html

Could people who have bought the la romantica beds, maybe setup and post there reviews over on reviewcenter. This will help out others who may want to buy la romantica.

Edit just like to add. RRP is now illegal, so making your sellers sell your mattresses at a certain price level, is not really acceptable. Little tip for la romantica.

I don't expect tim to answer this but tim has competition. You can save on a la romantica by about £20. They offer free delivery where as, tim charges about £30. Just though I would say.

In the spirit of moneysaving it would be good if you could say where! I've seen them a little bit cheaper at Bedkingdom but they don't offer any return policy (over and above DSR) so it probably evens out.
