I bought a pair of glasses from Glasses Direct a couple of years ago and was happy with the specs and only paid £24.
Ive now had my eyes tested again and need new glasses so went back to their site to get the same ones again but with new lenses that I need, yet I cant get them for anywhere near £24. I think it was nearer to £50 so I am looking around to see what other companies make them cheap since I cant afford to pay so much and the optician glasses werent very nice.

GD Rep...can you say when/if your company will be providing for slightly higher scripts eg upto -10.00??
Thanks0 -
ASDA Opticians do George glasses for £50 with extra thin lenses 1.74 plastic (and I think 1.8 index glass) thrown in or designer ones for £70 - or 2 pairs for £90 of either price. They cater for all scripts.

I'm sorry to say that we don't currently have any plans to increase the strength of prescriptions that we dispense to. The limit at the moment is +/- 8 when you combine both sphere & cylinder.
Sorry I don't have any better news for you.

My local Boots has a small selection of Sunglasses at half price at the moment. I always expect the high street to be so expensive (usually use glassesdirect) so I thought the price tags were the reduced prices, not so! The big names may be overpriced but there are offers to be had.
Used Boots this week and was charged £63 for prescription readers (including £25 frame). Varifocals would have been £130,0 -
Hi Natc,
The same thing has happened to my VERY expensive optician purchased glasses on more than one occasion (plastic bit breaking). In fact I took them in on one occasion to an optician locally and paid £7.50 per plastic bit to have them replaced (they had to replace both as the new ones were larger) only to have those tear within a couple of weeks. I took them elsewhere and paid £5 per plastic bit this time and have had those for about 3/4 years now. So it can happen whatever you pay for your glasses. Difference being my glasses were several hundreds of pounds (complicated prescription - the frames weren't very expensive), where as your glasses were cheaper than my first repair to begin with and with a free repair kit! Lucky you.0 -
This is a long thread! Can anyone give a general update on the cheap, quality glasses providers? I have to wear mine most of the time as I am short sighted. Need to replace them so any help would be appreciated.0

Just had my rimless glasses reglazed with Ciliaryblue,£40 including all postage and packaging. I am highly delighted with them, every bit as good as the ones i got from a well known major High Street store. It's an absolute rip off what these High Street stores are charging for the same service.
I would just like to thank MoneySavingExpert for the advice which i found here and also a very big thanks to Ciliaryblue who i chose to do my reglazing. If anyone is after a first class speedy sevice, i would not hesitate in recommending Ciliaryblue. I am sure that other reglazers mentioned here are probably equally as good, but i can only speak from my own experience with Ciliaryblue who i found to be excellent.
The money i have saved by visiting this forum will make this Christmas a little bit Merrier.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to one and all. especially everyone at Ciliaryblue.

I've been wearing glasses all my life and have purchased many many specs in my time.
I have been ripped off each time as I like to get hi index lens which easily add £150 on to the price of a frame. If you wear glasses all the time like me, you need to get a decent pair and my average spend has been around £300 each time.
Anyway - having searched the net, I came across ciliaryblue.com and thought I'd give them a go - amazing service.
I ordered online and paid via visa. My email was acknowledged immediately (Sunday). I received a prepaid case to return my glasses for reglazing on Tuesday. I posted them off the same day and they received them the following day (Wed). Today (Friday) 7.30am received the glazed spec's - super thin 1.67 with MAR. I'm really impressed. I did have a £15 nhs voucher so the price is a little bit more if you dont.
Also another tip if you are after designer specs - dont buy from the high street. I tried on a few armani frames in the shops found one I liked, noted the model and ordered off the net. Massive savings.
Very happy!
Regards
