Are you for real? Do you realise how many years of training opticians have to go through? Or how much the equipment costs? I think £25 is more than reasonable to be honest. It's less than any good dentist would cost, and they generally take more time too.

    Cheers

This made me smile a little.

PD measurement is carried out by receptionists in many many opticians. It makes more sense for the Optician to start his next test. And many practices don't have Dispensing Opticians.

The only people that have to measured and fitted by a qualified Optician or Dispensing optician, are minors and those registered blind or partially sighted.

  • Better get my eyes tested too - havent been since I was in school. The free D&A one looks good - thanks
  • My local opticians does complete specs for £24.

You get to try them on and the technician makes them while you wait and you get a free cuppa while you're waiting.

    Wouldn't go anywhere else.

Complex lenses are more expensive though - no way would mine cost £24 (I wish they would!).

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Hi Tia 1803,
with a prescription that high I would go for the 1.74 index plastic that are light and thin, or you could go for the thinner 1.80 or 1.90 index glass, they are though much heavier and not as robust. We do lots of 1.74's in powers like yours, if you choose the right frame they can look fine. Don't go for semi-rimless or rimless and try and choose a frame that has the same dimensions as your p.d. (the measurements on a frame may appear as 52/20 this indicates the overall size of the frame, if you add theses frigures togther i.e 72 then if your p.d is 72 it puts the optical centre of the lens in the centre of the frame and stops them looking too thick at the edges?) Ask if you can have the edges of the lenses polished too as it makes them look much nicer, its easy to do on the machine when they are cut into the frame!
    thanks for that!
where is going to be the cheapest site to try...given the prescription????

  • Complete pair of glasses for £24 cor, I wish. My last pair of glasses were £250.

Don't know if this has been mentioned cuz I haven't read the whole thread but, if you sign up on Vision Express website you get a voucher for a 1/2 price eyetest and 10% off a pair of glasses. Makes the eyetests only £12.50!
  • Might be worth mentioning here that Glasses Direct have a 10% off sale on till the end of January, and if you order two or more pairs the postage is free. Enter code HAPPYNYGD to get the discount. Their prices are amazingly low anyway, I have just ordered two pairs for a total of £53 for both!

I am a great fan of online specs since reading threads on this forum. I have recommended Giarre.com for "designer" specs on previous posts. Also had lenses re-glazed by Cilaryblue.....excellent service. Frames at Specsavers look very much like those on Glassescrafter.com! I was very nervous initially, especially when I ordered my first pair from Giarre as they are based in Italy, but within 10 days they arrived by tracked courier mail and were exactly what was ordered and the lens are great.

  • After reading this thread a few weeks a go i popped in to Tesco to have a FREE eye test, i dont think they were best pleased that i wasnt ordering my glasses in store with them there and then ( they were quite pushy which i hated from the start), but i made my excuses that on their website they have a larger range than they do in store (its true their website advertises it and encourages you to order online) the manager even tried talking me in to buying there and then at which point i refered him to what his companys website quoted, they dont tend to like it when you no more about their company than they do, anyway to cut a long story short today i recieved my first pair of "internet specs" from https://www.goggles4u.com and with in 10 minutes i had ordered a futher 2 pairs, the only fault i can find is the cheap nasty cases, but the glasses themselfs are fantastic.

many thanks for this, the first pair cost £20.87, just ordered two more at a cost of £37.20 thats 3 pairs for £58.07, the ones i saw at tesco ( that i liked ) the cheapest were £74 and the more expensive £120, even if it was buy one get one free, the saving by ordering online is amazing !
