  • Not very impressive is it bargain babe.

I wonder how many MSE users have ordered from glases direct since seeing the threads on here - and if so, whether they would recommend? Anyone??
Seems to me that they can't compete with the turnaround times on the high street. Guess it was too good to be true and you get what you pay for. :'(

Problem with Glasses Direct is like lots of the other online suppliers. They're not actually opticians with a b&m practice. So they have to still rely on outside suppliers. I've just been to Seymour Specs - It's an independent optical practice in Sheffield called Eye Lounge (Nice name and no I don't work them) and seen their kit. Granted their shop is small but perfectly formed but they do have an optical lab that was grinding out orders while I watched them. I can see now how they managed to get the orders out pronto! Don't just take my word for it, try them yourselves https://www.seymourspecs.co.uk

Anyone know how to spell Fairyvocal!

Indeed, though it seems that to sell specs you are better off with a good web design and PR team than any optical knowledge or manufacturing capability.

It highlights the fickle world we live in.

Is it not possible to have new lenses fitted into my two year old frames at any of these places? Been to D&A for a (free) sight test this afternoon, and now have my prescription, but overheard the sales lady telling someone else that it costs from £60 to have new lenses put into old frames.

I've posted before re Glasses Direct but I thought I'd mention my latest experience.
My mum had a stroke a couple of years ago that affected her vision. Her last pair of bi-focals cost £362. I took her latest prescriotion to glassesdirect and added in the extra notes that they asked for. I had to phone up her optician to get some of the extra figures regarding the distance between her pupils or something, (which according to glassesdirect are often missed off prescriptions by opticians to deliberately ensure that anyone else can't make such accurate glasses) and then fill in the boxes. The frames and bifocals lenses came to £52.00. She also had to pay £2,50 to have a pair of frames sent to her to see if she liked them before she had lenses fitted (optional). Glassesdirect phoned her a couple of days after placing the order to check some information. They were courteous and helpful. They said the glasses would be with her in 28 days. She received them in 10 days from the order being placed. They are brilliant and she has no problems whatsoever with them despite her additional sight problems caused by her stroke. My mum's a pensioner and £300 is a lot of money for her to save. I can't recommend them highly enough.

I would add that glassesdirect give a £5 voucher to anyone mentioning them on a website like this but as I don't need to order any glasses for a while now I won't be claiming it;)
  • That's exactly the sort of service I'm looking for in an online optician. Not too many around that deserve feedback like that. Thanks.
  • I used glassesdirect a few months ago and bought a pair of designer specs. They sent the wrong colour - red and black instead of black. To be fair it only took one phonecall and five days later I had my new specs. They cost £45. I had seen the exact same pair in D&A for £115 earlier that week.
    I would use them again.
