  • Hiya,

Am looking for some help! I need to order reading glasses for my nan, the problem is that her near addition is +3.25. The websites suggested before only go up to a maximum of +3.00. Does anyone have any ideas a u can imagine we don't really want to have to go to the opticians and get them as they will be rather expensive!

    Thanks in advance

    Michelle
  • If its purely just reading specs she is after they sell them in poundland (not sure what power range is like though)

The reading prescription is made up of adding the addition to the rest of it

so if it looks like this (roughly),

    sph cyl add
    right +2.00 0.00 +3.75
    left +2.00 0.00 +3.75

the reading prescription will effectively be +5.75 , this only applies to reading glasses not varifocals or anything. So although site may only advertise a reading addition up to +3.00 she may still be able to get her reading glasses there.

  • Yeah sorry I should have said that she needs her presciption put into them as well. This is

    Right 0.50 -0.75 115 +3.25 add
    Left 1.00 -1.00 100 +3.25 add

Thanks for ur help in advance

    michellehogben,

Ive just looked at goggles4u as a quick test and they dont allow a reading addition over +3.00 but if you actually calculate the prescription so its just for reading it becomes

    Right +3.75 -0.75 x 115
    left +4.25 -1.00 x 100

(ive assumed the first number that you have written to be a plus power, if its a minus then this equation is wrong)

You can then enter this as a distance prescription, you will need to put the pupil distance down as 4mm less than what it is normally to allow for the amount the eyes converge when you read (ie if you measure 64mm then use 60mm). Other than that there is no difference in what is actually made between distance and reading.

Just to stress again that this is for reading only and the only time she will be able to use this is for close range work, if she wants to have specs she wears all the time and can read with them and see across the room then the only option is to buy on the high street.

Sorry if any of that seems patronising i just wouldnt want you to make a mistake because of me !!

I was in Costco yesterday. They had very nice readin specs at £10 for 3 pairs.

(But why would you want THREE pairs??)
  • I've used a couple of the glasses companies based abroad and although their delivery was good considering how far they come (Pakistan in the case of goggles4u) the quality wasn't up to much. Three out of four pairs subsequently snapped and the website in question hasn't even replied to my emails. I wasn't asking for a refund as I realise ya gets wotcha pay for, I was merely pointing out a fault to them.

Having now used glasses direct the difference in quality if obvious, so I've just placed another order with them. Watch this space, I'll probably manage to break these as well !

Good thread, folks. I'm on the lookout for some new specs so I'll check out all the sites you mention and post some feedback later!

My distance prescription is a negative number : -3, reading addition +1.75.
If you add the two together this comes to negative -1.25. Looking at the specs in primark today, they only do positive numbers. Am I doing it wrong or cant I buy off the peg specs? Help!
  • Clowance,

Off the peg specs probably wont help you much im afraid, you have 2 choices; either buy from an on-line store like any of the ones mentioned above or take your distance specs off to read, which will still be a bit trickier but better than wearing your glasses.
