I bought a pair from the spectacle case for my husband (http://thespectaclecase.com/)
I cannot recommend them enough. The glasses are made in the UK and you can talk to the optician on the phone if you have any queries.
My husband broke his glasses a week before we went on a climbing holiday and when we discovered that Dolland and Aitchison were going to take a week and a half I went online.
The Spectacle Case were great. The optican Geoff chatted to me on the phone about everything, even double checking the measurements so I could be assured that the glasses wouldn't look weird on my bloke's skinny face!
They actually sent the glasses to our guest house so we got them in three days (normally they take six days, but they made a special effort because of our emergency!) and the glasses were absolutely fine.
They only cost £17.50, including postage, so we were expecting something not too posh, but in the end my hubby has kept these as his main pair and has been using them with no problems at all since July. They are also guaranteed for a year.
Like I said, no reservations about recommending them. I was so impressed.0 -

after carefully reading everybody's comments i've taken the plunge and ordered glasses thru optical4less... In true MSE style, i had my free boots eye test and then ordered new style glasses... I've just had an email saying that the glasses had been dispatched and 25.69gbp taken out of my account.. Now just wait and see....I shall report on quality of item...and if they are good i'm sure i will get another pair...A friend is a present which you give yourself (R.Stevenson)

Well after lots (and lots !!) of looking and an eye test, I have just ordered from https://www.goggles4u.com
I asked via the live chat about the coating and they confirmed that they consider anti glare and anti-reflection to be the same
(technically they are the same thing and the way to see if you have it on your specs is to let artificial light pass over them, if you have the coating the reflection will appear purple or green if not it will be white)
anyway i paid $25 dollars which is around £14 so bloody good for rimless, we shall see when they get here !!
a great tip for anyone wanting to take their own, pd if you measure from the outside edge (your temple side) of one eye to the inside (nose side ) of the other eye that should be the same as your pupil distance (for distance specs) (this method is used on kids as they never look in the right place long enough ) its much more accurate than the mirror method as your eyes converge slightly when you look at closer objects so if you get too close to the mirror the measurement isnt accurate !!

So's mine, and I have a huge cylinder measurement in one eye thanks to my amazing astigmatism. They got all the coatings on mine no problem, so I'm very surprised they gave you that excuse. Must say I've had no problems with them - in fact, I messed up the prescription on my second pair of glasses from them (forgot the '0' on the end of my three-figure cylinder measurement!); I emailed them and explained the situation, and even though it wasn't their fault (and I was very clear it was mine), they offered me a new pair at 30% discount, so it only cost me an extra tenner, and hopefully someone's benefiting from the other pair I gave to charity.0 -

Too right. Who exactly has told you that you're unable to get them online? When I first checked out Goggles4U, I found that they went from +10 to -20 and I was unable to pick a cylinder measurement that the site refused. They do varifocals and bifocals too, although as has been said elsewhere, varifocals bought online might be a problem because the measurements have to be so precise. Nevertheless, before you shell out £300, Peter, you might want to do a little more research, and posting your prescription, as brinky suggests, might be a good start.0 -
Is it a prism that you have peter-pan ??
Complex prescription generally means a little more than just very high, (for example if you have a turn in your eye this requires a prism in the lens and sadly there is no way to buy these on-line)
Maybe you could try a hsa plan and see if this helps with the costs?

PS as said before pop your prescription on and see of we can help !!Bow Ties ARE cool "Just because you are offended, doesnt mean you are right" Ricky Gervais0
