Car Hire - too good to be true?

  • The Police call reference number is CHS11954. This is not the same as a crime number, since when I phoned a crime hadn't yet been committed. Our car is due between 2pm and 6pm so I can't report it until after that. Has anyone reported this to the police and if so could they post the crime reference number they were given?
  • We have just informed the police and they are fully aware of it across the uk from the North East to London. We have also reported to the Guardian Newspaper, who are investigating and ringing each individual who has complained and finally the HSBC are fully aware and again its nationwide, they are dealing with it again on a national basis and have also spoken to the "beneficiary" of the account we all transferred monies into!!!

    Merry Christmas :)

Even the website for this rentmac looks thrown together from a template.
I do feel for those that have sent any money across, but if by miracle a car turns up for someone, then i'll eat my words!

I'll be honest, other than avisprestige, hertz, other very large car rental companies the luxury/prestige car rental sites are all very amateur looking. There isn't really anything about rentmac/rentmeanycar that appears different from those..

Which number did you call for the police, your local one or the Met or .. ?

and who/how did you contact the Guardian? Need to give them my details too..

PM me the details please, I have yet to phone the police today (our car was due at 9am today) - by the looks of things we've paid the biggest deposit so far on here too :(

    Thanks!
  • the fact that HSBC are fully aware may explain why my money appears not to have cleared from my account... which is a small bonus...
  • Could you also give the Crime reference number so that we get straight through?
  • Has anyone heard anything. We put down a very large payment and I am now very nervous about this. I am on the phone with the people at Rentmac.co.uk on 0844744040 and trying to get it sorted out.Was on the phone talking to real people but then found out that they are just an outsourced reception agency and are not based in any building. They also can't get through to anyone at the company at the moment.

Does any one for a fact know if this is a real scam or if at the moment it just sounds a bit dodgy? I'm trying not to panic here!

If it is a scam is there a number we can call for help?

    Thanks.

Sorry to say it's sounding like a scam. Did it start off with 2k by credit card deposit which quickly changed to 2k by bank transfer as 'their insurance company were worried about all the chargebacks' and they then lowered the deposit to 1k for us - which we sent via BACS. Funnily enough they have not charged the credit card for the rental amount though (about £600) - but we've cancelled that card now anyway and logged it with the fraud team at Egg.

Did you get an eDocument to sign? In it it referenced RMAC/DBD (rentmeanycar / diamonds by design) - I have to say a lot of the stuff looked fairly legit - some of it a bit pointless if it all is a scam though..

Who did you speak to at rentmeanycar? Our contact was Simon Tate (email info@rentmeanycar.com)
  • I've now booked alternative car hire.

Does anybody know of anyone who has actually received a car through these places, seeing as the offer period began on the 20th December?

    Ever the optimist you see!
  • The crime reference is individual so wont help!

There is the possibility of a refund via your own bank, we were advised of this by HSBC, no guarantees but its an option to follow.

Interesting that the Guardian are looking into this.
