Now I think of it, even at my parents' house (they live in another city now) when me and my fiance come to visit, we can just help ourselves to whatever we want.

Perhaps you can but surely you wouldn't without asking? How rude!

I have a cheese monster in my house... I can buy a £5 block of Cheese on a Friday night and DS has made it disappear by Monday morning ;)
Its a bit of a standing joke, I actually wrote on the block with a sharpie saying 'Hands off Tom!' but he still eats it.

Buy it pre-grated. Or grate it into a bag once you get it home.

He won't be able to snaffle it so easily then ;)

When my brother and i lived at home we always asked for something, and my kids do now, they wouldn't dream of going into the fridge and just helping themselves, i've never had to ask them to do that, they just do it. Husband does as well, even though i tell him not to ask.!! but if i've made a cake for someone i will say' don't eat that cake its for such and such'. If i go to my mams, i will wait till i'm offered, if nothing marerialises in the first ten minutes, i'll tell her to get me something - ha ha!

There are coloured re-sealable bags you can buy. That may help too.

Due to wheat intolerance, I don't eat most of what everyone else has. There's a tin in the cupboard with my biscuits in and another one with other biscuits in that I can't have. I think dad's snacks for work are in another cupboard.

Generally, we can have what we want. However, I've been told a few times that I can't have the small bananas because dad can't get them in his lunchbox.

  • It's a similar case in my house, it got so bad at one point that the treats that were supposed to last a week were ate in a few days! It was a vicious circle of my brother getting to them first, helping himself, then me grabbing something before they all disappeared and then brother would eat even more so that he didn't miss out!

We now all have a "secret stash" (including my mum and dad) that we don't touch. There's also a "free for all" cupboard with stuff that isn't bought for anyone in particular. It means there's less of an atmosphere of "get it before it's gone".
    Thank you competition posters!
  • haha people on here make me laugh.stealing food..ive always thought that things that are bought to be eaten are and can be eaten anytime...our children are always looking for things to eat and although they do ask i wouldnt flip and call them a thief if they ate something they shouldnt.People are very tightfisted on here i buy £20 of goodies every week to put in the cupboard that the children and ourselves to snack on ive even seen people saying they have budgets of £20 for christmas and the parents buy them underwear and a few sweets and 1 toy for christmas. We have always bought our children alot at christmas and we spoil them rotten its the one day they can be spoilt i would spend in excess of £1000 per child and before people start saying they cant afford christmas.well i only work part time and i am on benefits.I save what i can and sell things on ebay especially for this time of year.sorry for the rant

I wouldn't bet on it, in fact it would save him the job of grating it all over everything he cooks for himself ;)

I don't mind really, but on the odd occasion when I have come for some cheese and found a 1" square block I have threatened to murder him :p
  • In my Mum's house there has always been Baking cupboard and a Treat drawer. Never the twain shall meet. :p
But then Baked treats are left in a tin on the countertop for anyone to dip in.
    :o
  • All very interesting. I have a 13 yr old who's had a really bad year and taking food has been one of her things. I told her it was stealing at one point when i was livid with her and she genuinely didn't see it like that. Totally relate to the point various posters have made about teens needing to graze and going for the easiest thing in sight. My DD is on the verge of an eating disorder (seeing a counsellor) and so it's very sensitive for us but I am focussing on making sure we can talk about it - last thing I want to oo is drive her underground.
