am really concerned to hear form those where HMRC are taking it back! I didnt think anyone could take your money from your account without your authority? and if they are taking money back surely there is some protection under direct debit guarantee, you should have x amount of notice prior to funds going out? Im pretty sure tax credits are paid by DD arent they??? am bit bemused by this, as if you think about it - if HMRC can just take money from your account like that, why do you have repayment schedules etc if you are overpaid? they would just grab it all back! Anyone who knows about these things who could clarify this please? thanks! x0

Just been looking at my statement and it looks like the payment in from HMRC is via DD, not BACS or anything? so under DD scheme you are protected surely if they take money out? and without checking Id have thought that if a DD is set up putting money INTO your account, they would have no authority to take money OUT of it?? I may well be wrong but would appreciate advice on this from people who know what they are talking about!0

HMRC do not put money intoyour account using DD. DD means a direct debit which is money coming out of your account , not going in .
I dont know what method is used to put the payment in as i always assumed it was BACS but i can tell you its not DD.The loopy one has gone :j0 -
I got the letter weeks ago and haven't had a penny.
BACS is the method used to pay money into accounts. NOT DD.

I didnt know they could do that.
AFAIK, they can recall payments that they make to your account. They don't take the money from your bank account per se, but they recall the payment they made to you. I believe they can do this for BACS payments. I remember being told by the bank once that my salary hadn't been cleared yet so I couldn't withdraw from it as the company could recall the salary. This could be what HMRC is doing.0 -

They can recall payments.
The student loans company caused me loads of trouble last year when they recalled a payment of almost £2000 out of my bank account the day BEFORE the payment was actually put in! Be aware of that if they are recalling payments as well.August GC 10th - 10th : £200 / £70.61
NSD : 2/80 -
Thanks all for explaining, can see now what you mean
