:eek:I got one of these letters before Xmas too and didn't think much of it. However, my bank called me around an hour ago as a courtesy call to ask if I was aware that a large amount was being paid by WFTC and is sitting as a BACS payment ready to credit my account in the morning (and to try to get me to open a savings account). I said that I was aware there may be a payment, but didn't know how much. She told me and I nearly fell off my chair! Its a fortune and am now really worried as its more than what is due between now and April. I've just spent the last 45 minutes trying to call the Tax Credits "helpline" only to repeatedly get a message saying they are busy and to try later. Has anyone else had this happen? I don't know whether to think the Lloyds call was some sort of elaborate hoax (no, I didn't give away any sensitive info, just standard security and they knew details about my accounts that I think only my bank could possibly know). If its right, then have they made a mistake?? It could really turn things around for me if its all above board, but I can see a sleepless night looming worrying about it!
Dont want to pry into how much your bank said was going into your account but obviousley if its more than whats due in total from now til April, it must be a lot more then a couple of hundred quid! Someone said they got the extra payment and then they took it straight back so be careful, dont wanna see you having to pay a small fortune back! And if it is more than what you are due from now til end of tax year, its to be hoped that youre still going to get your weekly/monthly payments as normal. They giveth then they taketh away!... Have you got it sorted out yet..managed to get in touch with HMRC???

I dont get tax credits nor have i put in a claim.

So you dont actually receive tax credits ?
I have received the payment AND they have taken it back! So it was an overpayment

    Now that is strange !
The loopy one has gone :j

My friend has just told me that she had 2 seperate payments last week, 3 if you include her normal weekly payment. Her bank say that they are from HMRC so must be these extra payments but she has not had any letter. They took one payment back however so shes glad she hasnt spent them (and doesnt intend on spending them incase they are wrong) She wont believe me when i say it could possibly be extra payment, she thinks its an overpayment and hasnt a clue whats happening as she cant get through to tax credits helpline. People are hammering the helpline due to these letters they are sending out. Because they arent very clear about why, when, how much etc, people want to know whats going on. Or, like my friend, some people have had payments but no letter so need to contact HMRC for their own peace of mind but CANT GET THROUGH! Whats the point in sending these letters out, they are as much use as a chocolate kettle! And those that have got payments but no letter (and havent even heard a thing about these extra payments) are panicking that they have got an over payment. I havent got a letter or payment but im not complaining....im happy to have things left as they are!!
