The 2010 budget says that CTC is going up by £150 but I would imagine this will be spread over the 12 months. Information on this can be found on the tax credits website. Hope this helps.

The child element of CTC is going up by £255 per child (I think the spending review added an increase to that announced in the budget, plus inflation increases). Most other elements are pretty much the same, or slightly higher due to inflation.

The withdrawal rate is going up from 39% to 41%, basically people on low incomes or big families will be better off but those on higher incomes will be worse off.

that info was useful, thank you. But is there a link regarding these letters that everyone seems to be getting about extra payments before the end of this month?

Not that I know of... but it's just the stupid way the system works, they don't seem to able to adjust next year's run on payments without redoing this year's. Normally they wouldn't bother and any changes in tax credits would be adjusted at renewal, but as the changes in April are fairly substantial I guess they didn't want incorrect run-on payments.

It's nothing to worry about - if you get an extra payment it'll be taken off the payments till April ie you're just getting a bit in advance eg if you get £90 extra and you have 3 payments left till April you'll get £30 less each payment.
  • has anyone had any extra payment yet then?

:eek:I got one of these letters before Xmas too and didn't think much of it. However, my bank called me around an hour ago as a courtesy call to ask if I was aware that a large amount was being paid by WFTC and is sitting as a BACS payment ready to credit my account in the morning (and to try to get me to open a savings account). I said that I was aware there may be a payment, but didn't know how much. She told me and I nearly fell off my chair! Its a fortune and am now really worried as its more than what is due between now and April. I've just spent the last 45 minutes trying to call the Tax Credits "helpline" only to repeatedly get a message saying they are busy and to try later. Has anyone else had this happen? I don't know whether to think the Lloyds call was some sort of elaborate hoax (no, I didn't give away any sensitive info, just standard security and they knew details about my accounts that I think only my bank could possibly know). If its right, then have they made a mistake?? It could really turn things around for me if its all above board, but I can see a sleepless night looming worrying about it!
