HGVs are a special case, they need to make sure their tyres are in a suitable condition for squashing cyclists. Just like bus drivers have to make sure the indicator & steering wheel interface is working, so they know to pull out after half a wink, and white van man has brushed up newly invented profanities.

But normal car drivers checking their car everyday...

I see I give you an example and you move the goal posts.

I bet the police car that stopped him was checked today.

Or by normal drivers do you mean ones on 9 points who don't wear sealbelts?

I'm sorry Gene but you are being naive. Look out your window tomorrow and watch for an hour at people leaving for work. Count how many carry out daily checks then get back to us.

And I didnt replace the 4th as I was advised there was plenty of life left in it. I dont want to push this though as the garage i take the car to for pre-MOT checks is a relation. Unfortunately.

But did the MOT station say anything? (i.e. put it on the advisory list)

And the third i should have fought as it was in the country where there was a tiny stretch of 30mph amognst nationl speed limit roads. I turned onto it halfway along and there was no sign in view telling me the limit had changed. The reason it was 30 was because there was a pub on that stretch which made it a built up area. I passed the pub at 25 mph as I am not some maniac behind the wheel that everyone seems to want to label me. I sped up to nearly 40 thinking it was a 60 and a police officer was waiting, funnily enough at the point where it turns back into a 60. I feel I was unfortunate on this occasion, but I am sure others will disagree.

    Fought what?

You were exceeding the speed limit. Did the maniac behind have control for your right foot?

Being a dumb clint is no defence so nowt to fight.;)

Also if you want to talk about HGV drivers, I can tell you some horror stories, but I wont.

Thats a matter for them. I wonder how many will post on here and moan about being caught.

Millions with drive legal and unchecked cars tomorrow and won't get a single point between them.

It's a shame you have disposed of the tyre, as there is now no way of checking what the tread depth actually was. It's not inconceivable that the tread depth was incorrectly measured, either by being measured in the wrong place or using the instrument incorrectly.

It seems that your only realistic option is to offer whatever mitigation you can (recent MOT, evidence of recent maintenance [i.e. the 3 new tyres]) and plead hardship. If you're very, very lucky, you might get to keep your licence. Fingers crossed, eh? :)
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

I can assure you that if it had been a police officer this had happend to, they would have fought it. There was a local case last year of an out of town police officer visiting a relative in hospital and he found a loophole despite clear signage on the dual carriageway he was driving on. He fought and won his case against a speeding penalty. And less of the dumb sunshine! Nobody is getting personal with you despite your obvious lack of intelligence.
