Hi PeachesPeaches - I have the morphy richards fast bake and love it. I was tempted by the cookworks one in your thread and was advised on MSE forums that it was definitely one of those things worth investing a little bit more in...the MR FB one does jam, cakes, pizza dough and lots more, not sure about the cookworks one....goodluck!

  • Thanks .......... goes to search for vouchers with money off for MR .....
  • After much dithering and searching for vouchers I have bought a Cookworks one from Argos. The breadmaker looks fine, but the instructions arent very comprehensive, so I have downloaded the MR ones as a guide. I think the Cookworks instructions are a translation!

I thought I'd bought everything, Hovis strong flour, yeast ... but no, I havent any dried milk so DH will get that on his way home.

I actually went to Asda first as I read elsewhere on MSE that they had breadmakers reduced. I even phoned to ask if they had them in. Yes they replied. Got there, no one could find any although the computer said they had them in stock. So black mark for Asda Sheffield... I was very disgruntled as its the other side of town from me and it was a special trip.

Anyway cant wait to get stuck in when the milk arrives. Just thought, whats it like without milk? I have lactose intolerance and can get away with a bit of milk in cooking without too bad an effect, but wondered how necessary it is?

Anyone else got the Cookworks one? When I read the manual I thought, well, perhaps I should have got the MR one, but I just couldnt afford it.
But if my loaf turns out c**p I will take it back ... argos are good like that.

Don't fret about the dried milk, I find the loaves made with the MR recipe aren't as nice as other recipes using fresh milk anyway and they are hard to slice thinnly.

Try this one if you like a rich white loaf that is easy to slice.

Makes a 1 1/2 loaf (use the 1lb setting, you may want a light crust instead medium depending on taste):

1 egg plus 1 egg yolk
    6 fl oz fresh milk
    1 1/2 tbsp butter
    3 tbsp sugar
    1 tsp salt
    1lb 2oz white bread flour
    2 1/4 tsp yeast

Bung it all in and press start! :T

  • i use half and half of the basic white plain flour from tesco, with tesco's strong white flour, and my loaves always seem to turn out fine......one tip tho.....i'd leave out the dried milk when making the bread cos it makes it taste a bit cakey.

    HTH x

Just re-reading the thread and noticed this ... DH grumbled it was expensive too! Wish had seen this before ... dont want it cakey want it bready!

How many others leave the dried milk out?

Also I was a bit disappointed with the cake recipes as you have to do some mixing beforehand. What do you recommend as the first cake?

Has anyone had much success jam making in the bread machine as per the Morphy richards recipe? Is it a nightmare to clean afterwoods?

  • OMG my first loaf smells divine!!!

I cant wait for it to cool. It looks really impressive too.
  • It tastes gorgeous! DH cant leave it alone. I cant believe it worked so well first time, its almost foolproof. Just did the basic white exactly as it says in the book. The little hole for the mixing paddle was a lot less noticable than I thought it would be too.

I cant believe it was only £23.99 !!! Really chuffed. Ive already thanked the OP but thanks everyone for persuading me that it was worth getting. Cant wait to make more bread tomorrow!

I belonged to SW briefly - I though you could have whatever you want within reason, as long as it is counted? I would estimate syns based on a comparison with standard shop-bought. Just weigh the HM bread. 1 slice standard bread = 3 syns? So count 1oz HM bread as 3 syns? Check with your class manager, but I'm sure I remember they said that HM food is the best way to get the most out of the diet, when I belonged...

I asked when I joined, she said that I would have to work everything out individually i.e syns for flour, marge etc Advised me that it would be alot easier if I just bought the stuff.

just been browsing my local charity shops this morning, and i came across an old book (from the late '70s) called ''The Complete Bread Book'' and i couldn't resist!

its got loads of different recipes for making bread by hand, but i just wondered if,or how, i could convert some of them to do in the BM

all the weights are in lb's and ounces, so would i still weigh the flour etc as that, or can it be converted to ''cups'' ?
