I am having fun experimenting with mine. So far :
Basic white loaf is fine - not that exciting.
Basic wholemeal with added chopped nuts and seeds is FAB :T
White potato loaf is okay - nothing to rave about.
Today I made a white sandwich loaf (with a handful of mixed seeds), and I prefer that to the basic loaf.

    I love my BM! :D

would have to agree with pink about the yeast, i use asdas fast action yeast and the flour is carrs which was yellow stickered, setting one takes two hours forty five mins, thats a small loaf, big loaf is two hours fifty, is yours taking longer?

We have 2 timing settings for the basic white loaf; 1.5lb which takes 2hrs 50 and 2lb which is 3hrs. We did the 2lb one.

I'm using asda flour and asda fast action yeast.

We've just tried the yeast test and it did seem a little foamy on the top but not much! The yeast is in date but that's the only thing I can think of that is going wrong. This so depressing...I WANT NICE BREAD :rotfl:

    Thanks for your replies.

With a teaspoon of sugar and luke warm water, in about 10 mins the yeast should be frothing like mad ~ not just a little bit, ~ I don' know what anyone else thinks, but I think its the yeast that is suspect ~ try again with a different pack, and if the other is still in date, complain to the manufacturer.

Thanks very much, I'll have a go tonight with different yeast and see what happens!

  • New member here! Bought mine at the weekend, had some Argos vouchers from Xmas so ended up costing me £15!

So far have made white fast loaf, brown (not wholemeal) fast loaf and white&brown mixed sandwich loaf. They have all turned out fine but do seem to be quite heavy. Have been religiously following instructions, not quite confident enough yet to start tweaking. Think will put a but less sugar in the next one, but any ideas how to make it lighter? Ingredient adjustment or different program?

I'm currently using Tesco own but got some Hovis on BOGOF from Morrisons so may see if that makes any difference. Might even try sieving it in to get some air in.

I use the cheapest flour possible.. and mix ordinary 3 cups of 28p a bag plain flour with 1 cup bread flour and I use 1/4 ysp more yeast than the recipe says for the sandwich loaf recipe and the bread is wonderful every time!! I do put it on extra mixing at the beginning though too.. any old mixing setting for 5-10 minutes then switch it to the sandwich setting.

Is it doves farm yeast?? the one in the orange packet anyway.. shops own flours, ditto the dried milk and marg and ordinary sugar. Ie the cheapest possible/best offer available/free if possible ingredients.

  • Well, sorted out the problems with the bread being yellow (it was the olive oil - now using sunflower!!).

have actually found it easier to weigh out the flour these days for a more consistent loaf (took the average weight of 5 cups of each kind of flour) and things are great.

fave recipe for the MR is the basic white, but replacing 1/3 of the white flour with a wholemeal flour.

As for adding the ingredients in the right order, never found it a problem if you dont.

Now making 3 loaves a week (not bad for 2 people) and loving it.

I've just posted on the Grabbit board (as these offers are usually snapped up!), Morphy Richards are selling their Stainless Steel Fastbake Breadmaker, online for £28.02 (free P&P). RRP £69.99.
