[/QUOTE]I know all of my pupils inside out - I know when they are lying or not.
You might like to think you do but the very fact that you are so sure of it makes me doubt it0 -

so each parent is contacted, as this would be the only way to know for certain. Then they get a little visit from Social Services.......0 -

Goodnight!
All you need to know about what?
I've never asked you anything before in my life so why have you taken offence to my question?

It's interesting that all those in the "I let my underage child have these games and it's done them no harm" camp, are pretty aggressive and combative themselves in how they have posted on this thread. I do wonder whether they have actually watched/played the games themselves all the way through before coming to the conclusion that their darlings are mature enough to deal with what they contain. In my mind there is no doubt or ambiguity at all that to allow an 8 year old to play a game like this IS bad parenting, and I'm not surprised at all that schools will act on it if they find out.
For much, much older children (ie those who are nearly 18) there may be more of an argument about using parental discretion based on the maturity of the child, but that's just a ridiculous statement to apply to a primary school child.
As for the argument that they'll play it at friends houses, my primary school children don't go to play with anyone in their home unless I know the parents, and the parents I know share my values about things like this. I wouldn't send my child to a house whose parents were lax about the important stuff.0 -
You can't envisage any possible link between children playing these games at a young age and the violence on our streets?
Everyone's been having a total panic about knife crime for the last couple of years
Why did our young men suddenly decide to start stabbing each other to death with such horrifying regularity?
Does anybody know?
Have violent games been absolutely ruled out?
Do we want to take the risk with our next generation if there's even a possibility that playing these games is linked to real life deaths?
Like I said a few pages back
We don't know. These things are too new to have had enough long term studies done.
Meanwhile...
Until we know more...
I'd prefer it if we protected children from violence of all kinds.
Has tea been ruled out?I'm not bad at golf, I just get better value for money when I take more shots!0 -
OK. 1. I have not seen one single poster say they thought these games were suitable for 8 year olds
2. Nutsohazelnuts, whose children play for hours every evening exactly? certainly not mine.
3. Nicki, please attack the arguments not the posters. I may not agree with everyone's posting style but I haven't seen any aggression.
4. To people who leave it to the 'experts', experts change their minds all the time and they disagree. Noone knows your child better than you. I respect other parents choices and have no problem with opposite views to my own. I remain open minded on this matter as on most things but have not seen one shred of evidence on this thread that these games are a problem. Carry on.0 -
Just a point but has the OP been back on this thread since their first post?
In my personal opinion, I wouldn't let an 8 year old play Black Ops, however if I was ever in doubt about a games graphical content I would rent the game from Blockbusters, Lovefilm etc. and try it out for myself.
I haven't got children so can't comment in that capacity, however my nephew was allowed to watch disturbing films and play games that he shouldn't have and he ended up mentally disturbed and needing counselling as he was unable to differentiate between fiction and reality.0 -
To quote a friend's sister at seeing an ad for black ops
"I can't believe they're selling that, you have to rape a woman to win in it!"
That's the sort of ignorance us gamers are up against.I'm not bad at golf, I just get better value for money when I take more shots!0 -

Carry on.
One of those posting most vociferously about her right to let her child play the game, and the fact that this does not make her a bad parent, has a child who is only 10 according to her recent posts on other threads.
So I don't think you can assume that the "good parents" who let their children play the games "cos they is so mature innit" are talking about older teenagers, not least because the actual question being asked in the Op is whether the game is suitable for a much younger child.0 -
Why are you legally required to report if a child has played these games? No law has been broken if a parent buys the game and then allows the child to play it.
The offence is only if the under 18 buys it (read the video recording act 1984 section 2 covering exempted supply.
maybe if social services didn't have busy body reports to deal with they would have more time to look after the baby P cases in this country.
I can quite see why the teacher is legally required to report if a child mentions playing games which are 18 rated.........as many of them are not only violent but have a strong sexual content too. and I would applaud any teacher who does this!
and maybe if social services picked up on these issues sooner, we would have LESS baby P cases! or do you think babies Ps parents were brought up by model parents?0
