I asked my gameplaying son (he is 27 and I know he plays this game), whether he would give it to an 8 year old and he looked at me as if I had grown two heads! he was incredulous! his reaction was that any parent who actually bought this game for an 8 year old had to be totally stupid! (his words not mine)! then he told me he wont allow his 15 year old brother-in-law to play it.

Personally for a child at age eight, I wouldnt. My son was happy playing his Lion King and Alladin games at that age which was lovely, but there did come a point in his early teens that his mates had all the gory games and he wanted them too, and dont kid yourself, they are DEFINATELY playing them when they go round to their mates houses. Do not ever allow yourself to bow to ''well all the kids at school have got the latest @@@@@@''. Say what you mean, and mean what you say to kids.

What is an 18 rating though? Being age 18 does certainly not mean you are old enough to view 18 films or watch 18 rated games - surely maturity has got to come in to it, its a one size fits all mentality.

i dont allow my child to watch the simpsons but he knows who they are as in most shops they have clothes/books/magazines with them on

so if you allow youre child to play cod are you willing for them to watch debbie does dallas or any no of !!!!!! films they show on those adult channels
or are you going to buy him alchol

where do you draw the line

I actually do believe in this taking away the glamour theory. It does work. Regarding alcohol, I let my kids taste beer, wine, even whiskey when they were quite young 11/12, just a sip. Neither one of them has ever shown an interest in it and neither has ever been involved in binge drinking. Now as adults they can take or leave it.

As for video games there are so many great games on the wii for 8 year olds. When they were that age I involved myself in the games they were playing whether it was Monopoly or Worms. When my son was 10 he developed an interest in Laura Croft, Tomb Raider (which we enjoyed greatly as a family) but generally their interest can be drawn away from inappropriate content to the more interesting and fun games that are available for the younger age group. These war games are just ghastly. the imagination of an 8 year old should be stimulated and challenged.

  • This may seem petty (OH says so :p) but I don't even want my impending son to have toy guns, let alone an 18 rated war game.:o

  • My son is 7 and there is no chance I would buy him this (thankfully he has no idea about COD games and more into fifa). There are children in his class at school who do have this game though.

The thing to aim for is for them not to be interested in guns. Therefore if he shows an interest in toy guns buy him a moulded plastic one and he will quickly become bored by it. If you make an issue of it he will want one even more and everything will become a gun from sticks to lego. Thats what I did anyway and it soon became a boring bit of plastic that didnt do anything.

  • My partner works in Gamestation and is actually shocked at how many parents have bought this game for their young kids. He's lost count the amount of parents that have actually asked "Is it really that bad?", disregarding the 18 rating on it.

I think giving an 8 year old a violent video game is a child protection issue and I would call Social Services.

What a RIDICULOUS comment to make. Do you not think that SS have more pressing issues to deal with?
I totally agree that an 8yo should NOT be playing an 18 rated game but-social services? Seriously?

    Agree on this one.
