Child would like unsuitable game for christmas HELP!

Options
Our son will be 8 on sunday and he has asked for the new call of duty black ops on Wii, not knowing what it was about i went on the internet to find out what it was, then i noticed it was an 18 rating, i spoke to him about it and he said all my freinds have it in school.

I know that the 18 is put there for a reason but would you buy it for your son, and is it really that bad.

Thanks.

  • There's no way I'd buy it for my child. I've seen the adverts (not played the game) but I think the ratings are there for a reason and a 8 yr old is different to a 16 yr old.

I would say he is a bit young as it is quite graphic and the sole aim is to kill. My sons pay COD and i have bought black ops for christmas but then my youngest is 13. I do know younger children who play it and they haven't turned into mindless thugs because of it but it wouldn't be my choice of a game for an 8 year old.

No - my son is 9 and there is no way.

Just because other people are crap parents, it doesn't mean you have to be too. Don't bow to the peer pressure!

My 13yr old grandson isn't getting it either as its really unsuitable and far too graphic in my book... so I definately wouldn't be letting an 8yr old play it

It depends on what he's used to and what other games he's already got / already played at friends' houses. Like you say, the 18 is there for a reason.

Basically in this game there's a lot of blood and gore, you can shoot the enemy and then go up and look at where half their head has been blown off. This might sound bad but he's probably already playing games with the same type of thing.

Also in my opinion this kind of blood and gore isn't as bad as the rape and drugs related storylines you get in games like grand theft auto.

My boys are older and have played it as I think they are mature enough to handle it.

However, I wouldn't let an 8 year old play it as I think it's too graphic for them. You can also play online and mine understand how to stay safe, but I would think an 8 year old could be more easily led by unsavoury people.

Has he watched any war films or documentaries? The graphics are similar to killing scenes he would see in those.
Here I go again on my own....
  • my sons are 8 and 11 no way would i let them play it or buy it for them, far too graphic.

There's no way I would let a pre-teen play this game, but I guess it depends on each parent to make the choice. Personally though I think it is certainly unsuitable for pre-teens (and even young teens too).

This might help, from an online review for parents:

" What's the Rating? Call of Duty: Black Ops is rated "Mature" by the ESRB with content descriptors listed for "Blood and Gore," "Intense Violence," and "Strong Language." Black Ops is an extremely violent game, especially in the campaign, where the cinematic moments focus on and ratchet up the gruesome activities. One scene sees a man stabbed in the eye, another sees a man punched repeatedly after glass is put into his mouth, and as a whole, you'll frequently see people shot, beaten, or burned to death, or caught in an explosion. Bodies can be dismembered by firearms or explosions, and you'll see blood on a near-constant basis, as it sprays from attacked enemies and pools on the ground. Blood is also spattered on the screen when you're attacked, growing more intensely red as you get closer to death. However, while the game is built around violence, the more graphic visual depictions can be lessened by restricting Graphic Content in the options menu.

Frequent expletives are also heard in the game's dialogue and online multiplayer modes, including words like "f**k," "s**t," "b***h," "d**n," and "h**l." And as with previous entries, online opponents are generally quick to talk trash and swap expletives, so be prepared if you plan to play the online multiplayer modes while using a headset."
