Hi KKW. I believe they have to take the date of the claim from the date the letter was received, not from when they get around to it (that's certainly the case for the self-assessments where just because you've got your form in before the deadline doesn't mean they're able to look at it immediately).

They should have the tax code information in your file, but don't you have P60s for those tax years? (They give your final tax code and at least it's only one form per year, rather than 12 or more wage slips per year.)

I don't know, scooby, since it's a tax allowance, I suspect it could only be paid to whoever was the tax payer at the time. Why not just ring them up and ask - they can only say no.

  • Looks interesting. I'm gonna pass this onto my partner's sister, she has a child and currently claims tax credits. Hopefully she'll receive something. :)
  • Originally wrote letter to Tax office in May, done a follow up letter in July as got no response, finally had a reply today, unfortunately for us, we had already received the Tax allowance, but if you don't ask you don't get.

Good Luck to everyone else trying.
  • Hiya, I was sent here via a link from another website.

I have read the whole of this thread and am still totally confused about who to ring and what exactly I am claiming for.

I have just rang my husbands accountants and asked for his tax codes and because he is self employed he doesn't have tax codes or P60.

Does anyone else who has a self employed husband know if there is anything I can do?

    Sorry

No, Mermaid, you just had to be a tax payer with principal responsibility for your child(ren). I claimed as a lone parent.
