doesnt effect me yet, i too am in a Scottish University... I havnt read everything on this, but i know that if this comes into effect in Scotland, i will most likely need to quit as with a £7000 student loan per year (x 4 years) to pay back i wont be able to add the fees on top, I'd be paying for the rest of my life with no way of saving for my retirement (what retirement? got student loans to pay off!)
I agree, not as many from the working classes will go to Uni in the future, it would be different if their was jobs available, but in reality their isnt.
Im doing a 4 year degree, im a mature student (28) with a 3 year old son (single parent). Ive worked since i was 15 up til my work (6 years with them) discriminated against me as i was a single parent who breastfed, I didnt take them for indirect sexual discrimination (employment law specialist advised me to), instead i decided to go to college and from their i got encouraged to go to uni, even though im in the 1st year of my course, i know im going to have to do a post graduate into something else to make me more 'employable', and whilst doing all this, ive taken up 2 languages to help!
Im putting myself through all this to give my son (and me) a better life, as the only other option available to me is benefits. Their are NO jobs here, have been none for 3 years now. I know if i was still working, i would rather my taxes went on someones education, in the hope that they get a job and pay taxes back instead of it going to a layabout with no intentions or hopes of ever getting a job. (not a dig at everyone on benefits, just those who know how to play the system and never intend to get a legit job!grrr)
Does these fees affect college courses? as you need a HNC (in Scotland) to work in childcare, social work, care homes etc.... and not many people will want to go with the prospect of loans hanging over them for ever!0 -

Ok. I think I can remember something in our recent history (being 48)
Once upon a time business and major goverment organisations in this country were moaning that there were too few people with the skills needed to fill professional and skilled professions. Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers etc.
So the had to recruit from outside of uk and look towards Africa, Austrailia and Nz etc to fill all the posts ie Teachers, Drs, Consultants.
So guess what going to happen in 10-20 years from now.
Oh yes I can see it now in my crystal ball.........Its all becoming clear.
We as a country benefit greatly from graduates. Youngsters who come from a average background with average parents earning average pay will NOT be able to afford to go.
Not everyone wants to be treated in hospital by some plummy upper class !!!!. The balance in this society has shifted big time today.
Ive been saving for my kids to go to uni. To help them through it so that the debt would be not so great. Ive told them to try hard at school and do the best they can. They are 11 and 12. Whats the point now. We fit nicely in the bracket like most others who are not poverty striken and not wealthy. There is no way they will be going now.
They can just join the other kids now and mess about in school. Treat it like a social club. Because my daughter who wanted to go into dentistry and my son who is into engineering can go join the dole queue with everyone else.....0 -

No, maybe the balance will come that people really consider their choice of degree course. Maybe our economy will begin to absorb the graduates who have not been able to get a job, never mind a career.
There is nothing stopping your children from going to university. There are loans available, and there will still be loans available.0 -
The SU is partly subsidised by the university.
Libraries do not run themselves and paid for by fines.
What do you mean what heating? Buildings have heaters to keep the place warm....
Electric costs for computers. Electric isn't free. Neither is gas.
And students should pay for unis gas bill now? lol
Behave.
9K a year is not worth it, more so with just a few hours of lectures each week.
I can see distant learning taking off
As for the ppl clapping over this, then expect more competition for your job lol.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Looking at some of the thugs at the riots, they do not deserve to go to uni. It used to be that only a few intelligent youngsters went to uni, now they all go - most to do micky mouse degrees. I don't know why they are worried, most of them will never earn enough to pay back the fees.
Two of my neices went to uni, did proper degrees and have very good well paid jobs (one is 24 and earns £40,000 and the other is 22 and earns £32,000). I work in a shop and almost all the staff, except me, have degrees - we earn £6.00 an hour!!!!!The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -

Economy to blame not degree choice.
People with good 5 GCSE C grades should get a simple, standard job yet do not.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Wow. I am really shocked by all these people saying make the students pay. I think it is a complete betrayal of young people and will be a huge impediment to social mobility meaning those that are poor or not even that poor but bright and motivated will not be able to get on in life. Students will now have to take on debt of more than there family's annual gross income to get a degree. That is very scary if you are from a low income family. And you know what they do pay it back because if they earn more they pay more tax and get into to the higher rate band if not the 50% more band. Uni often does allow people to change their lives and future to be something they could never have been otherwise.
What happened to education being a good in itself? I would far rather live in a country of high educated people who knew how to think rather than knee jerk reactors talking nonsense. Why should education be about the market place?
What about the good the country gets from educated young people. If we do not have a highly skilled work force how are we going to compete as a country? How are we going to do all of this knowledge based economy which seems to be our only hope as a country.
All of those moaners who say how easy education is these days do not know what they are talking about and you do young people a disservice. Yes there are easy GCSEs, A-levels and degrees and I do not think they should be allowed but there are plenty of hard working motivated young people out there trying really hard to do well. Who take taxing academic subjects.
50% of people should not be going to uni it should be much less. Not everybody should be forced down an academic route but what are the other options? You need a degree for almost anything now. But what happened to proper apprenticeships i.e 4 to 5 years training after which people were truly skilled? Oh yes, private employers did not want to pay and then they get the government to pick up the tab for all education and complain that people are not skilled enough. Encouraging people to go to uni to keep the unemployment figures down and then get themselves into £30 - 50k worth or debt is a betrayal twice over.
These plans are lazy and fail to thing imaginatively about the situation.
Finally, I am so sick of the politicians saying but people do not understand the proposals. Also saying the plans are fairer because they will mean a lower monthly payment but much more to repay is treating people like they are stupid. Stop treating people like they are stupid, they do understand they just think the plans are fundamentally flawed.0 -

Pure scandal.
Would you riot if there were very limited spaces at university and that effected you? That's the alternative which would lock out pretty much anybody that hasn't been to private or grammar school.0
