No your right it doesn't affect me directly. I had no care for uni when i had the oppertunity.

My firends however did attend uni, the amount of "student loan money" they spunked down the pubs/clubs was rediculous.

Maybe putting towards this supposed higher education would actually be a good thing

and i doubt people would care if people boycotted uni - it's not the end of the world is it. Your still not guaranteed a gold plated job that they all seem to think they're entitled to anyway

Not everyone chases the degree for a dream job.

If uni was charged at £1250 per year then most would be enticed to pay for it without student loans.

Costing more and more every year? So £9000 now, what next £12000?

    Same result, richer get richer.

How the hell can uni be charged at £1250 though! It should cost a lot more and i'm glad they are now being forced to pay more

Like the other poster said it's a choice.

want a higher education?, pay for it. if you don't want to pay more then don't go
If Adam and Eve were created first
.Does that mean we are all inbred

Currently, taxes go towards subsidising students university education even though it is a choice.

Choices need to be paid for by the people, not by others.

You want the choice to drive, you pay for a car.
You want the choice for a house, you buy a house.
You want the choice for a boob job, you pay for it.

The fact is, with this, the taxes will no longer subsidise those that do go to university, making it exceptionally fair on those that do not go to university.

University isn't the only option out there to "better yourself".

Coming from someone who went to uni before this policy takes effect is rather amusing lol.

Your stance would change should you be effected by this.

The gov 'chose' not to pay more, but 'chuck' it on the students.

lol. It was charged at £1250 per year years ago.

At this rate, fees will go higher and higher.

Expect a mass boycott of uni in 2012.

No doubt a few lib dem MP's felt threatened to lose their jobs if they didn't vote for it...

No it wouldn't. I would still have gone to university.

The fees are not up front so they exclude no one from going to university who get the grades. The payment period is longer and the salary at which you start paying back is higher which means you pay back less per month. As before the loan is different from bank loans, so it does not effect loan, credit card or mortgage applications in the same way. Only the monthly outgoing is considered and as that is so small it has insignificant effect. The new fee system solves all the funding problems universities have and it takes the burden off people who chose/choose not to go to university and therefore did not benefit.

    Who cares ?

Education has gone downhill over the last 15 years.

When I went to Uni, it was the top 2.5%. I'm gessing that approximately that another 2.5% also went to Poly (remember those days !!).

It is now almost 50% of all school leavers go to Uni.

Absolutely disgraceful that students are expecting the state to subsidise their education !! They should be demonstrating against the almost 50% of school leavers going to Uni to show worth of any degree awarded rather than any financial consequences.

I have no sympathies with students until education standards are made as tough as they were in my time; not like what they are now !!

Good to see that the government has voted in favour of the student charges.:)

Well education standards is not down to the students.

Forget uni though, it starts with primary and secondary school standards.

Alot of schools merely have GCSE pass rate of around 30% for some. Some less. National average around 60% last time I checked.

The part that angers me is the tuition itself. The Uni I went to (Bath Spa) will probably be charging £6700 a year under the new fees. By the 3rd year tuition went down to 5 hours a week. At the time I think the fees were £1000-£1500. £6700 for 5 hours tuition a week?! I can't remember how many weeks there were in the year but for the sake of this we'll call it 30. That's about £45 per lecture/seminar!?! That doesn't take into account lectures being cancelled. Education should be of value- not a complete rip off!
