Our local council keep asking my mum to pay her council tax this way. She refuses and sends a cheques instead.0

If I use my partner's card, can the cashier tell it's not mine? Does it come up on his/her screen whether the card is a mr or mrs?******** Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity *******"Always be calm and polite, and have the materials to make a bomb"0

you should still not use their card - as if any fraud is done on their account and another person knows their pin number then they are unlikely to get it back0

.. perception, but certainly not reality :-There were just over 5.3 million cheques issued each day in 2005 .....source APACSIf you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

also you can not write a cheque direct to say "Halifax" or British Gas" now - you must put either persons name with it or the account number. This is for security
Really? If I write a cheque to my Gas supplier (which I am having to do because of their !!!!-up of my Direct Debit) I don't put a person's name on it - just the companies. Same with other bills - none ask for an individual name. They do all ask for the account number on the back though. We all evolve - get on with it0

Quite correct - the changes from 1st Oct 06 are advisory (not statutory) and only apply to cheques made payable to Banks / Building Societies :-

Yes advisory that -You must write your account number on front - as well as either company name or yours
 for security
when I was a cashier at bank, I saw too many times a cheque made out just to bank. If that was lost or stolen, anyone can pay it in
I know the bank i work at will not accept cheques at all if not made correctly now. Also thought it was to companies too - but even so definatly worth putting full details on cheque now anyway, if you are posting ect. They give me cheques for their mortgage with just mortgage lender's name - no account details for thousands of pounds. A fraudster would like that money if the cheque had been lost in the street0

I prefer to use cheques as it makes it easier for me to keep an eye on my bank balance, plus it makes me more aware of what I'm spending.0
