Warning - no cheques at all Asda stores from 1st Jan

After a trial inside the M25 ring, Asda won't be accepting cheques at any of their stores from 1st January 2007.

Our local store has the sign up now - and according to staff - this will apply everywhere.

The official explanation is that it will speed up service at the till, but I'm not so sure. After my earlier visit today, when only one-third of the tills had cashiers on, I could think of another way to reduce customer waiting time.

This has to be great news. The time I have had to queue behind someone who decides to write a cheque can be frustrating, especially if the have a debit card but still insist writing the cheque. FANTASTIC.........

Cheques are just as fast as cash - particularly when you're behind a coffin dodger who insists on paying the 96p in small change.

Cheques only require a signature, same as debit cards used to.

And the reason people use cheques when they have a debit card could be that they need shopping two days before payday! I know I've done it a couple of times.

...which of course is technically fraud....

Possibly fraud, certainly it is sailing close to the wind on no intent to pay but if you know pay will be there by the time the cheque is presented I am not so sure.

I would have thought that cash would have gone before cheques with the possible exception of at the basket aisle

    you're probably right of course.

as for cash, what about all the poor people without bank accounts? You know, the ones you always hear of about in the news...?!

I wouldn't call it fraud... banks do this all the time when you give them a cheque and you don't see the coin for a few days, or when you pay by direct debit and it's a few days before they get it (allegedly)... actually yeah you're right :)

There was an item on Radio 4 a good while back about Chip and Pin and the fact that some visually impared people can't use it but can use cheques. Wonder what Asda will do about this?
