when I was a cashier at bank, I saw too many times a cheque made out just to bank. If that was lost or stolen, anyone can pay it in
I know the bank i work at will not accept cheques at all if not made correctly now. Also thought it was to companies too - but even so definatly worth putting full details on cheque now anyway, if you are posting ect. They give me cheques for their mortgage with just mortgage lender's name - no account details for thousands of pounds. A fraudster would like that money if the cheque had been lost in the street
Good points and thanks for that.
Used to work in a bank many moons ago but realised when reading your post that I can't remember the last time I was actually in a bank or building society. We all evolve - get on with it0 -

But their tills print the cheques. I have to admit i prefer a paper trail, i use cheques rather than a debit card.0 -

We have quite a lot of cheques at our store, and they are slower than other forms of payment - except C&P when people press 'cancel' instead of 'clear' when they enter a wrong pin number - v. annoying!
I hate it when a completely townie-looking ne'er-do-well comes in want a £300 gold chain and whips out 'their' cheque book - the words 'stolen' and 'bounced/cancelled' cheque spring to mind! I even had one woman once trying to make a £200 purchase with a cheque guarantee card of £100 and telling my because the hologram said £100 three times on it the limit was £300!!! It took all my self-control not to laugh out loud!
